Catholic High had five individual champions and won the East Ascension Spartan Open wrestling tournament on Wednesday, scoring 198 points. Brother Martin, however, with only two champions, finished a mere 15 points behind with 183 points, wrestling their second-string team, as their first team was resting after winning the Cinco Ranch Big 12 Invitational in Katy, Texas, last week. The Crusaders proved the importance of consolation rounds, placing eight wrestlers in either third or fourth place. Live Oak finished third with 111.5 points, followed by Teurlings Catholic with 99.5 and East Ascension with 87. A total of 26 teams participated in the tournament.
Two-time Division I state champion Tyrek Malveaux of Comeaux won his first
tournament of the year at 160 lbs. En route he defeated Division III state
champion Alex Martin of De la Salle 6-4 and, in the finals, he defeated Division
I state champion Brandon Luckett 10-8. Malveaux was voted the tournament's
Outstanding Wrestler for his performance.
