The Catholic High School Bears of Baton Rouge kept their dual meet record unbeaten this season with a dominating performance at the Catholic Duals last Saturday, winning all four of their matches by at least 10 points.

The format consisted of two pools of four teams each.  The teams which placed in a certain position in one pool faced off against the team that placed in the same position in the other pool during the championship round.

Catholic defeated Live Oak, Hahnville and St. Amant in “Pool A.”  In the championship round they defeated Jesuit, winners over Brusly, Zachary and East Ascension in “Pool B.”  The 40-30 win was their closest match of the day.

Defending state champion Brandon Luckett pinned all four of his opponents for the Bears at 160 lbs.  Miles Nash (220 lbs.) earned three wins and a forfeit.  Phillip Nauta (120lbs.) and Matthew Mire (132 lbs.) went undefeated, but did not participate in all four matches, exhibiting the depth of Catholic’s team.

Jesuit’s Nicky Charles, with only one loss this season, pinned all four of his opponents at 106 lbs.  At 113 lbs. Mitch Capella of the Blue Jays remained undefeated on the season, earning two pins, a technical fall and a forfeit.  At 145 lbs. Efosa Eboigbe won all four of his matches.  Manny Armour also remained undefeated, winning four matches, splitting them between 195 lbs. and 220 lbs.

Jesuit’s Gaston Eymard was 14-1 at 152 lbs. before facing Catholic’s Kevin Moran (10-4).  The match went into overtime where Moran prevailed 8-6.  Moran won his other two matches of the day with a pin and a technical fall.

One of the most anticipated matchups was in “Pool A” at 126 lbs. between juniors Brennan Taylor of Catholic and Cody Hill of Live Oak.  Hill beat Taylor 12-6 in the finals of the St. Michael Warrior Open, but lost to Taylor 3-0 and 4-1 in the finals of the Central and East Ascension tournaments.  Both had defeated returning state champion Jacob Dale of Comeaux, and both wrestled two-time defending state champion Matt Calcote of Rummel this season.  Hill beat Calcote 3-1 and Calcote defeated Taylor 4-2 in a “Sudden Victory” overtime period.  Hill prevailed this time 7-2, evening the record between the two wrestlers at two apiece.
