Four of the six placed in the top five in the
two-day event, leading Comeaux to a 10th place finish in the 25 school field.

Two-time defending Division I state champion
Tyrek Malveaux, at 152 lbs., lost 3-2 in a double-overtime finals match
against two-time All-American Ricky Regas of St. Thomas High of Houston,
Texas.
Malveaux, the # 1 seed, advanced to
the finals via a bye, a fall, a technical fall and a major decision.
It was Malveaux’s first loss of the
2012-3 season.
In his first tournament of the year,
at East Ascension’s Spartan Open, Malveaux won a 10-8 decision over
Catholic’s returning 152 lb. state champion Brandon Luckett in the
finals. Malveaux was also a star running back for the Comeaux football team. |
Abram Sellers, seeded 2nd
at 138 lbs., advanced to the finals via a bye and three first period pins before
eventually losing to Niles Peebles of Cinco Ranch in Katy, Texas, 10-8.
“Abram wrestled really well and beat some very good wrestlers” said Comeaux head
coach Keith Bergeron. “In the finals he wrestled his best match of the year and
lost to a good wrestler by 2.”
Other Comeaux wrestlers placing in the top five were
Matthew Tillman, who placed 4th
at 220 lbs., and Vincent Opper, who placed 5th
at 170 lbs. Jacoby
Guillory (126 lbs.) and Jon Robinson (160 lbs.) also wrestled for the Spartans
and won five matches between them, adding to Comeaux's impressive performance
with less than half of a full team participating.
The Woodlands Tournament has become a tradition at
Comeaux.
“We take our seniors to the Woodlands Tournament
every year,” said Bergeron.
“It is one of the Houston areas biggest
tournaments and is well organized. The most important thing for us is that it
gives the seniors a chance to stay together for the weekend and become a closer
group for the rest of the season.”
