Jesuit tops Holy Cross 42-19 - avenges "Bulldog Duals" loss
Editor/12-15-12

Jesuit dominated Holy Cross on Friday evening, winning 9 of the 14 matches, in a 42-19 victory at the Holy Cross gym, avenging a November 17th 37-28 loss to the Tigers at the Fontainebleau "Bulldog Duals."

Holy Cross was missing starters Dylan Soileau (113 lbs.) and George Benoit (138 lbs.), which may have prompted them to gamble a little with the line-up of their heavier wrestlers, but by the time they could have taken advantage of that move the match had been decided.

Alex Nicosia (top) crossfaces Jesuit's Ben D'Antonio.  Nicosia won 9-3, giving him 16 wins vs. only two losses on the season. The official starts to slam a pin for Jesuit's Jackie Robinson 1:19 into the first period against Holy Cross' Preston Robichaux.

Holy Cross' Beau Bush started the meet off with a Tiger victory.  His opponent was Jesuit's Brody Martin who had beaten Bush 9-3 at the St. Michael Warrior Open.  Bush fell behind in the first round but fought back, and scored a last second reversal to nip Martin 7-6.  Jesuit 0-Holy Cross 3. Jesuit's senior Mitch Capella remained unbeaten by Louisiana wrestlers with a fall in 1:13 over David Clement.  Clement, a freshman, was wrestling in the place of starter Dylan Soileau.  Soileau has lost to Capella twice this season, but only by a 1-0 margin in their first match.  Capella's record stands at 18-0 vs. Louisiana opponents.  Jesuit 6-Holy Cross 3

Defending Division II state champion Alex Nicosia of Holy Cross had a 15-2 record going into his match against Jesuit sophomore Ben D'Antonio, wrestling in place of Max Grosch.  D'Antonio kept it close, trailing at one point only 5-3 in the third period with both wrestlers on their feet.  With a takedown lead, however, Nicosia was able to fend off the D'Antonio's tie-attempting takedown attempt, and turned it into a score for himself.   He also added two near-fall points for a 9-3 victory.  Jesuit 6-Holy Cross 6

The 126 lbs. match was a lesson in riding, as at the end of regulation each wrestler had scored two points apiece.  Holy Cross' Collin Guerra took down Jesuit's Jacob Rovira in the first round and rode the round out.  Guerra started the second period on the bottom and Rovira rode him out.  Rovira reversed Guerra in the third period but neither could muster additional points, sending the match into overtime.  Guerra scored a takedown for the "sudden victory" win in about 40 seconds.  Jesuit 6-Holy Cross 9

The scoring in the 132 lbs. match was all in the first period.  The Tigers' Nicholas Bonck (17-5) scored first with an ankle pick, but Jesuit's Will LaFranca, 3-5 over the season at the time, including an 8-5 loss to Bonck in November, reversed Bonck to his back and added three near-fall points before Bonck reversed him back.  In the last two periods neither wrestler could turn over or escape from the other, preserving a 5-4 score in favor of LaFranca.  Jesuit 9-Holy Cross 9

With Benoit out of the line-up, Holy Cross entered sophomore Preston Robichaux against a very experienced Jackie Robinson for Jesuit.  Robinson started what would be a 7-2 match run in favor of the Blue Jays with a first period pin in 1:39.  Jesuit 15-Holy Cross 9

Jesuit's Efosa Eboigbe was 18-5 entering this match, with three prior victories over his Holy Cross opponent, David Olivier.  Olivier had no answers to Eboigbe's attack.  Choosing to start the third period in a neutral position, Eboigbe's ensuing takedown merited him a 16-0 technical fall.  Jesuit 20-Holy Cross 9

This was the first match of the season between Jesuit's Gaston Eymard (16-3) and Holy Cross' Austin Doyle (13-6) and they had no common opponents.  Eymard proved dominant, not allowing Olivier to score on his way to an 8-0 major decision.  Jesuit 24-Holy Cross 9

Brice Duhe, a Sam Sara champion for Holy Cross, scored a major decision for the Tigers with a 13-4 decision over Stephen Queyrouze, improving his season's record to 13-5.  Jesuit 24-Holy Cross 13

Jimmie Brown started another Jesuit winning streak with a technical fall over Holy Cross' Nicholas Nugent.  Brown started with a "takedown-escape" strategy and then started scoring back points.  In the third period Brown had Nugent on his back and the resulting near-fall points would have given him a technical fall.  But Brown finished the match scoring a fall in 4:26.  Jesuit 30-Holy Cross 13

Jesuit's Gage Grush was 17-3 entering this match.  Holy Cross' Porter Dazet was 16-2.  Both won the Warrior Open.  Dazet defeated Grush in the Mandeville Open, but Grush defeated Dazet in the "Bulldog Duals."  Their familiarity was obvious, as the match was tied 2-2 at the end of the second period.  Grush had the option of choosing the bottom position in the third round, and his escape was the difference in a 3-2 match.  Jesuit 33-Holy Cross 13

What may have been Holy Cross' gamble if the match was close at this point was their forfeiting this weight class.  Jesuit's Manny Armour has 16 wins vs. 0 losses against Louisiana wrestlers, and three of those wins include major decisions or technical falls against the Tigers' Daniel Relayson and Michael Yeatman.  If Holy Cross thought the match might be close after 11 matches, forfeiting to Armour would give them a chance to score 12 points if Relayson and Yeatman won the last two matches via pins.  Jesuit 39-Holy Cross 13 No photo available

Jesuit's Dominic Carmello was 6-3 entering his match against the 18-2 and newly crowned Sam Sara champion Daniel Relayson of Holy Cross.  At one point in the second period Relayson was ahead 6-1, but Carmello rolled him to his back for two reversal and three near-fall points to even the match.  Carmello started in the down position in the third period, scored an escape, and was able to counter a takedown shot into a takedown of his own for a 9-6 win.  Jesuit 42-Holy Cross 13

The final match offered no points in the first period, and only an escape point for Holy Cross' Michael Yeatman in the second period, against Jesuit's Zachary Creel.  But Creel, starting on the bottom in the third period, could not get away from Yeatman, who eventually turned Creel and pinned him at 5:46.  Jesuit 42-Holy Cross 19

Holy Cross will be traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada, this weekend for the Las Vegas Invitational.  Jesuit will also be out of state, at the Toshiba Midwest Classic in Kansas City, Missouri.
