Brother Martin Crusaders 58  Rummel Raiders 9

Brother Martin started a new dual meet winning streak on Saturday evening easily outmatching the Rummel Raiders 58-9 at Brother Martin.  The Crusaders' dual meet record for 2012-13, stands at 17-1.  Their sole loss came on December 29th at the Deep South Bayou Duals against eventual tournament champion MacArthur High School from Oklahoma.

Austin Meyn (left) defeated Matt Calcote 9-4. Daniel Albrecht needed overtime to get past Michael Darwin.

The two matches that of major significance were Brother Martin's Austin Meyn defeating Rummel's Matt Calcote 9-4 at 126 lbs. and the Crusaders' Daniel Albrecht needing every second of a "Sudden Victory" period to defeat the Raiders' Michael Darwin 4-2 at 160 lbs.

Both teams were lacking some "stand-out" competitors, but the overall domination by the Crusaders still would have occurred had they been present.  Brother Martin was missing undefeated Dominic Casadaban at 138 lbs. and once beaten Tyler Robertson at 145 lbs.  The Raiders were without Tyler Frame at 145 lbs., the wrestler who gave Robertson his loss in overtime.

At the match former Brother Martin state champions were be recognized, as well as members of the state championship team of 2003.  In that year the Crusaders edged nemesis Jesuit 269.5 to 246 with state championships from Marc LoCoco (103), Joel Martinez (112), Jeff Smith (125), Brandon Hebert (145) and John Green (171).  The Brother Martin coach that year was Kenny Spellman.

Saturday's dual meet results are presented below:

106
Mason Mauro 10-Devyn Breaud 6
The difference in this match was in the last 15 seconds of the first period when Mauro scored a takedown and two nearfall points.  In the second and third periods both wrestlers escaped from the bottom position, took the other down and scored three back points.  Mauro waiting to score the last six points when down 5-4 made it a very fun match to watch.

Taylor Gambill 19-Damien Tornabene 4
With Breaud at 106 and Tucker Boesch unavailable, Rummel's Damien Tornabene got to face Brother Martin's Taylor Gambill.  The Crusaders' freshman showed why he is now 24-1, routinely scoring takedowns and nearfalls to win by a technical fall.

Paul Klein 9-Tyler Mire 0
Mire has only lost twice this year.  Once was against a Florida wrestler last week at the Deep South Bayou Duals.  The other loss was on November 10th, when Klein pinned him in the first period.  Mire has certainly improved since then, but Klein did all he needed to do to win and still did so via a major decision.

Austin Meyn 9-Matt Calcote 4
The match with the most implications toward seeding at the LA Classic was at 126 lbs. between Rummel's two-time defending state champion Matt Calcote and the Crusaders' junior and first-year started Austin Meyn.  The wrestlers had not faced each other before but had two things in common.  Both lost to Live Oaks' Cody Hill and both defeated Catholic's Brennan Taylor.  Calcote initially tried to "out-muscle" his opponent, but when that did not work he took Meyn down more routinely for a 2-0 lead.  But Meyn escaped and took Calcote down for a 3-2 lead after the first round.  Meyn chose the bottom position in the second period, escaped from Calcote and took him down again for a 7-2 lead entering the third period.  Calcote chose the neutral position to start the third, took Meyn down and let him escape.  The strategy did not work, however, as Meyn scored the last takedown to preserve a 9-4 win.  If Hill opts to wrestle at 120 lbs. at the LA Classic, this match should make Meyn the top seed.  If not, then Meyn and Calcote may be headed for a semifinals rematch.

Rick LaCava 11-Mason Williams 8
Starting the third period, when LaCava let Williams escape, giving him a 6-2 lead, LaCava changed his tactics toward takedowns only.  It works as the score went from there to 6-4, 7-4, 7-6 and 8-6 after LaCava let Williams go again.  LaCava's ensuing takedown also led to a three-point near-fall, which was the difference in the match and put Rummel "on the board."

Joe Kerry pinned Daniel Evans in 1:07
With Williams at 132, possibly in preparation for Casadaban's return to the Crusaders' line-up, Brother Martin put Daniel Evans against Rummel's up-and-coming sophomore Joe Kerry.  Both have a significant number of matches this season, but Kerry has experience with much more seasoned opponents.  The difference showed with Kerry's first round pin.

Patrick Hoppe pinned Christian Mire in 1:59
Crusader senior Hoppe has done a very admirable job filling-in for Tyler Robertson, whereas this was only Mire's 10th match of the season filling-in for Tyler Frame.

Devin LeBlanc pinned Cody Lacoste in 0:34
LaCoste was no match for the senior Crusader LeBlanc, who arguably could be the second seed at the LA Classic at 152 lbs. or 160 lbs.

Jordan Giroir pinned Guillermo Suarez in 0:56
Suarez was another Raider filling in for a "starter".  Giroir, 25-4, has solid records at 152 lbs. and 160 lbs. and should start at whichever of those weights LeBlanc leaves open.

Daniel Albrecht 4-Michael Darwin 2: SV
Rummel senior Darwin has only one loss to a Louisiana wrestler, and that was a third-period fall at the hands of Albrecht.  But that was in early November.  Early in the first period the wrestlers "butted heads" and Darwin was cut, leading to his head being bandaged.  He was not fazed though and, making full use of his height and agility, kept the match scoreless after the first period.   In the second period Albrecht scored a reverse and Darwin countered with an escape. But once again, and as would be the story in the third period when Darwin scored an escape, the two could not take each other down.  Albrecht would come close, but Darwin would stifle his attempts into stalemate.  Before the third period was over Darwin used some injury time and appeared to be disoriented.  But he was cleared to continue and the match went into a "Sudden Victory" rounds.  Darwin continued to wrestle Albrecht tough, but with time running out Albrecht was finally able to secure a match-winning takedown.
