No major surprises after day one at the GBR Championships |
Editor/02/01/2013 |
To nobody's surprise Coach Tommy Prochaska's Catholic Bears lead the Greater Baton Rouge Championships after the first day of competition on Friday. Considered by most to be the second strongest team in the state this season behind Brother Martin of New Orleans, the Bears advanced 11 wrestlers into Saturday's semifinal round while scoring 124 points, 25 more than their nearest competitor. The tournament is being held at Catholic and continues on Saturday morning.
Live Oak and Dutchtown are in a close race for second place. Live Oak has 99 points while the Griffins have 95, and each squad has nine semifinalists. Brusly (79 points) has seven semifinalists and East Ascension (66 points) has six.
Dutchtown has the most to win or lose in the semifinals. Of their nine semifinalists, six will wrestle against competitors from Catholic, Live Oak or Brusly.
No upsets of #1 seeded wrestlers occurred Friday evening. A #2 seed, Mitchel Youngblood of St. Michael, fell in the quarterfinals 9-4 to Brusly's Blayze Olano in the 160 lbs. weight class.
Third and fourth seeds, as is customary, took the biggest hits. Three third seeds bowed out of the winners' bracket early. They were Jared Durr of Zachary, at 172 lbs., who lost his first match to St. Michael's Christian Frey, St. Michael's Ian Harter, at 195 lbs., who lost his second match to Dutchtown's Jonah Howell, and Central's Wesley Lee, at 285 lbs., who was upset by another Griffin wrestler, Blake Pacheco, in a 2-1 decision. Fourth seeds who were upset prematurely were Baton Rouge's Eric David at 113 lbs., who fell to Lacklan Kritsonis of Woodlawn in 4:57, Central's Ryan Huffy, who lost a close 3-1 decision to St. Amant's Gabe Fontenot at 132 lbs., and Brandon Meaut of Dutchtown, who lost and even closer match to Dequan Jackson of East Ascension, 4-3, at 152 lbs.
