King outranks Cavaliers
November 28, 2014
Grace King won four of seven matches wrestled, which was just enough to defeat De la Salle 39-33 at the De la Salle gym Wednesday night.
Both teams appeared to have adjusted their line-ups to contest the matches, resulting in seven forfeited weight classes.
Pins were abundant, with first or second period falls scored by King's Jonathan Davadi, Christian Heningberg, Christopher Howard and Maycol Rizo, and first period falls by the Cavaliers' Glenn Gebo and Trenton Anderson.
De la Salle's defending Division III state champion Alex Martin won a hard fought match against King's Brandon Briones at 160 pounds. Briones, who was 5-0 in dual meets entering the match, garnered only one takedown to Martin's three, with each wrestler giving the other an escape point, leading to Martin's 7-3 victory. Martin, who is overcoming an illness, said he will probably not compete in the Trygg Memorial Tournament this weekend, and will instead focus on helping De la Salle's younger wrestlers at the Covington High School JV/JH tournament instead.
