The 182 lbs. bracket featured returning Division II state champion and Ken Cole champion Nick Schneider of Teurlings Catholic, returning Division III state champion Billy Marcantel of Rayne, as well as Griffin and Spartan Open champion Michael Daiy of Lafayette who, albeit only once in four tries, owned a victory against Schneider.
Semifinals
Top-seeded Nick Schneider of Teurlings (32-4) spent more time in his semifinal 13-3 major decision over #4 seed Jaden Oliver of Bossier than he did in winning his previous three matches. His record included championships in the Jacob McMillan Invitational and the Teurlings Catholic Rebel Open, as well as a runner-up finish at the LA Classic.
Third-seeded Daiy and #2 Marcantel pinned their ways into the semifinals. The two had met twice before during the season with Marcantel winning by a fall in 1:31 at the LA Classic and in 3:12 in a subsequent Rayne vs. Lafayette dual meet. This match proved to be little different. Marcantel dominated it from the first whistle and pinned Daiy 21 seconds into the second round.
Finals
Marcantel started the scoring with a single-leg shot which he turned into a double-leg attempt and then into a duck-under. When Schneider tried to switch him, Marcantel stepped over him and scored a two quick nearfall points. With five seconds left Schneider escaped and the round ended 4-1 in Marcantel's favor.
Schneider started the second period on top and used a cross-face cradle to put Marcantel on his back twice and take a temporary 6-4 lead. Escaping a pin, Marcantel rolled Schneider to his back for a two-point reversal and three nearfall points of his own. The round ended with Marcantel ahead again 9-7.
Schneider chose the bottom position to start the third period but Marcantel did not "let up." Using a cross-face cradle of his own, Marcantel scored three nearfall points of his own. That was the only scoring in the period, and Marcantel walked away with a Ken Cole championship.
Additionally, Marcantel was voted the "Outstanding Wrestler - Upper Weight Class" award by the coaches for his performance in the tournament.
Marcantel and Schneider are expected to be the #1 seeds in Division III and Division II respectively, both looking to become repeat state champions.
