District 9-2A has four schools with wrestling programs, and all were present at the District 9-2A Championships at Thomas Jefferson Saturday Morning.
John Curtis brought the most wrestlers, filling 11 of the 12 weight classes they filled against Rummel on Wednesday night, and the Patriots won the event, scoring 116 points. Prentice Spurlock (106 lbs.), Bryce Cortez (120 lbs.), Cody Hamrick (152 lbs.), G'Corey Fullilove (160 lbs.), Patrick Martin (195 lbs.) and Mason Pembo (220 lbs.) brought championships back to their River Ridge school. Fullilove and Martin just had to "make weight" to earn their championships, but they were there in the event other contenders appeared.
Host Thomas Jefferson of Gretna only has seven wrestlers and seven entered into the fray and placed second with 85 points. Spencer Savoie (113 lbs.), Ryan Daigle (126 lbs.), Jeffrey Kirkland (132 lbs.) and Brent Matherne (138 lbs.) won championships for the Jaguars.
South Plaquemines scored 57 points to take third place with their eight wrestlers. Kevin Drury (182 lbs.) brought home the Hurricane's only championship. Chris Danos (126 lbs.) James Grahan (132 lbs.), Deiontae James (138 lbs.) and Bo Navin (220 lbs.) wrestled to runner-up finishes.
Of Fisher's four wrestlers, Darby Fabre (145 lbs.) and Matt Adams (170 lbs.) won championships, though Adams was unchallenged. Fisher scored 47 pints to place fourth.
The 285 lbs. weight class was not wrestled. Curtis' undefeated Spencer Lemoine's only potential challenger was a sophomore from South Plaquemines who has not wrestled a match all season.
The most significant match of the day was between sophomores Prentice Spurlock of John Curtis and Logan Griffin of Thomas Jefferson. Griffin defeated Spurlock 7-4 on December 24th at the Jefferson Parish Championships. Spurlock might have garnered the #1 seed in next week's Division III state championships by defeating Griffin 4-3 in a dual meet on January 30th. But Curtis Coach John Kendrick was not going to rely on that outcome. Spurlock and Griffin met in the finals and, in seven periods comprising 8:30, Spurlock persevered, winning 2-2 in an "Ultimate-Tie-Breaker."
