Something to do in Jennings, LA on a cold Thursday night |
January 31st, 2014 | Written by: Editor |
UPDATE (2:30 p.m. Friday) |
The 2014 Ken Cole Memorial will be THE seeding tournament of 2014.
The Ken Cole Memorial always fields a great slate of competitors. But as it is held a week or, as is the case this year, a fortnight after the Louisiana Classic, it is usually a place for those who do not earn high seed via their performance in the LA Classic a chance to solidify themselves as second, third or fourth seeds.
But not this year. The 2014 Ken Cole Memorial will be the last chance (for most Division I wrestlers at least) to garner the top spot on February 21st.
The reason, according to scuttlebutt, lays in the state of Tennessee and some lax skin-checks which resulted in the Brother Martin Crusaders having to take three weeks off, which included their missing the LA Classic. As such, Brother Martin needs to compete, and win, to justify higher seeds than those from schools which did participate in the LA Classic. And those who did compete successfully in the Classic need to remove any doubt in the minds of State seeding committee members as to how LA Classic participants might have fared had the Crusaders participated.
Hence, along with the Crusaders there will be Jesuit, Catholic, Holy Cross, Rummel and St. Paul's from the New Orleans area - teams which do not often meet at full strength in tournaments before the state championships aside from at the LA Classic.
Expect most of the LA Classic winners to be the top seeds for the Ken Cole, though. It will be the task of the Crusaders to prove which of their wrestlers merit changes in the third week of February.
Granted, these seeds will probably not satisfy a lot of wrestlers from northern Louisiana, particularly the Division I ones. The LA Classic results are the only significant results the editor has regarding most potential matches between those wrestlers and their brethren in the south. Historically, however, the Ken Cole Memorial has been an event in which they can advance their seeding potentials if they are not fortunate to fare in the upper echelon of the LA Classic. Hence, wrestlers from the northwestern part of the state, please feel free to prove my seeds absolutely worthless.
After remedying the tremendous SNAFU on the LWN Website earlier this evening, and spending a couple of hours on this piece, the editor decided not to check to see if the Ken Cole Memorial seeds had been released prior to his publication of this piece. If they are available after this article is published, the editor will amend this article to also include the decisions of the actual seeding committee. (Actual information will be in red. NW = Not Wrestling) But expect them to look something like this:
UPDATE (2:30 p.m. Friday): Sixty teams are participating in this year's Ken Cole Memorial. Wrestling will be held in the main gym, the smaller gym and in the cafeteria. It is suggested that fans arrive early to attain adequate seating.
Apparently some teams are relying on LA Classic and GNO results. Hence some athletes who very well might have been top seeds at the Ken Cole are not participating. Catholic did not send any of its starters, which could result in two defending state champions not attaining the top seed at state. It remains to be seen if either circumstance constitutes a mistake.
As per the last information received by the editor there will be 71 "pig-tail" matches to qualify for the 23-man championship brackets. It is believed the ones who do not win their "Pig-tail" matches will be allowed to compete in the consolation brackets.
