NOTE: Connor Stampley (13-1) advanced to the semifinals with a 16-9 win over Cory Clark (11-5) of Klein. He will meet third-seeded Wyatt Alvis (12-1) of Martin.
Comeaux coach Keith Bergeron has made it a tradition to enter his seniors in The Woodlands Open, located in The Woodlands, Texas, north of Houston. The trip is to provide some interstate competition as well as to foster a sense of camaraderie between his seniors to make them better leaders for their underclassmen teammates.
Last season Tyrek Malveaux suffered his only loss of the season in a double overtime finals match against St. Thomas' Ricky Regas. Senior Abram Sellars also placed in the runner-up spot.
This year four Spartans made the trip: Connor Stampley (126 pounds), Jacque Girouard (152 pounds), Nicholas Malveaux (160 pounds) and Cabot Bellard (170 pounds).
Two northwest Louisiana schools, the Doyline Panthers and the Loyola College Prep Flyers, also sent teams to the tournament.
At 160 pounds Doyline senior Johnny Brooks-Feaster (7-5) won his first match 7-3 over Klein's Jason Thompson (9-8). In his next match he fell in a tight 3-2 match to Martin's Sean Deloach (11-3). He will face Episcopal (TX) opponent Charles Cutler (0-2) on Saturday. Sophomore John Innocencio (6-9) received a first round bye at 170 pounds and then lost to Conroe's Connor Webber (10-2) in 4:44. He will face Eric Weigand (2-4) of Kingwood next. His brother Chris (8-6), at 182 pounds, also received a first round bye and then lost to Ethan Silva (7-3) of Oak Ridge in 5:40. He will meet Martin's Jared Fisher (7-5) next.
At 113 pounds Loyola's Armand Zachary (junior: 4-0) was seeded fourth and won his first match against Ghalleb Calderon (0-2) of Clear Springs-2. He will meet Ryu Turcois (10-4) of Klein Oak-1 in the quarterfinals. Alonzo Zachary (senior: 2-2), competing at 152 pounds, lost to Joey Wiskofske (3-0) of The Woodlands-Green by a high scoring 25-10 technical fall at 4:51. In the consolation round Saturday he will face Tylin Williams (2-2) of Clear Springs-2. At 160 pounds Amir Ansar (senior: 3-4) defeated Conroe's Carlod Rodriguez (2-7) with a pin in 1:35. In the second round he fell to Matt Broussard (7-3) of Klein Collins. He lost his first consolation round match in 3:08 to Klein Oaks-1 Drew Chrisope (4-2).
Should they make it to the 160 pounds consolation finals, Malveaux and Brooks-Feaster could wrestle for third place.
