Trygg to include iced-out Brother Martin

Semifinals, Finalists and Notes

Icy weather in Memphis will not prevent the Brother Martin Crusaders from competing in a wrestling tournament this weekend - they are going to the Trygg Memorial at Grace King.  Brother Martin has entered two teams for a total of 23 wrestlers.  Twenty-one other schools, including South Walton High School from Destin, Florida, will compete in the one-day event.

It is very likely the addition of the Crusaders will contribute significantly to the duration of the tournament.  The Spartan Open had 29 teams and 207 wrestlers.  The finals started around 6:30 p.m.  The Trygg has 183 wrestlers entered, and tournament director Roberto Furtado said the tournament will run "straight through" which could mean the consolation finals and finals will be run at the same time.  Actual times are not available at present.

Missing from the event will be Holy Cross, which initially had the Trygg on their schedule but now are headed to the Shaw "Rauch Duals."  Jesuit will be at the Catholic High School Duals, as will Live Oak and East Ascension.

But very good matches are possible, albeit these matchups are assuming a lot of wrestlers do not drop down a weight:

106:    Brother Martin will likely start Steven Shields, the Spartan Open champion.  But South Walton Border Wars champion Chris Pickren should prove a formidable opponent, as should Rummel's Robert Fairchild;

 113:    Rummel's Devyn Breaud and Brother Martin's Mason Mauro could meet again.  Mauro beat Breaud in the 2013 state finals but Breaud beat him at the Spartan.  St. Paul's Steven Vanzandt is also at 113.

120:    Brother Martin's Ryan Genco, Mandeville's Nicholas des Bordes should fare well.
126:    Taylor Gambill is the Crusader to beat.

132:    Klein, Paul Klein.  132 should have two winners recognized - Klein and whoever makes it to the finals to face him.

138:    This will be tough enough with Austin Meyn of Brother Martin and Rummel's Rick Lacava.

145:    Pierce Williams of the Crusaders may get a rematch with Dutchtown's Brandon Cowell.  But Danny Evans may get the nod over Williams for the Crusaders. And Cody Pickren of South Walton should make the bracket very interesting.

152:    Mason Williams of Brother Martin and Marshall Hill might meet again, as they did in the Spartan semifinals.  Joe Kerry of Rummel won the event last season and should not be overlooked.

160:    Jack Fontenot of Ehret, Dutchtown's Gabe Arceeaux or Brother Martin's Travis Quarterman might end up in the finals with Tanner Leblanc of St. Paul's;

170:    Depending on what weight they actually wrestle, De la Salle's Alex Martin and Brother Martin's Nick Comardelle could meet.

182:    Brendan Allen may get a shot at the undefeated Yehia Riles of Brother Martin if he moves down to 182.  So might Fontainebleau's Ethan Eisenhardt.

195:    If Riles drops to 195 then Josh Tapia will be the one to watch.

220:    Fontainebleau's Garrett Kugleman should do very well.

285:    Without Holy Cross and East Ascension being in the tournament this weight class is open to anyone.
