Brother Martin won 12 of 14 matches
in a 61-7 victory over Catholic Wednesday night in a
landmark win for head Coach Robert Dauterive.
The Crusader victory was the 141st victory of Dauterive's
career, breaking a Brother Martin record that stood for 23
years. The old record took 13 years. Dauterive
surpassed it in little over seven.
Both teams were without some key starters. Catholic
was missing defending state champion Brennan Taylor and
Matthew Mire. Brother Martin started Anthony Schneider
at 152 pounds and moved Mason Williams to 160 pounds in lieu
of Travis Quarterman. |

At halftime Nick Comardelle

Shields scored the first points with a
takedown after 50 seconds and rode
Bradley the remainder of the first
period. After scoring an escape
Shields took Bradley down again and
maneuvered him to his back to net three
nearfall points. Bradley managed
an escape in the third period but
Shields took him down again and the
match ended 10-1 for the Crusader.
Shields is now 12-2 while Bradley fell
to 7-6. |

Chopin on his back one more time in the
round, pinning him at 0:58. Mauro
only has one loss to go with his six
wins, while Chopin's record is now 3-8. |

Matthews won his 12th match in a row and
his second over Genco. After a
Matthews takedown with a minute elapsed
in the first period, Genco scored two
escapes during the remainder of the
match. Matthews scored one also,
but Matthews took Genco down each time
they were standing, and once added three
nearfall points. At the end
Matthews let Genco up to try a final
takedown, but that one he could not
complete and he settled for the 9-3
decision. After losing two of his
first three matches, and avenging both
losses later, Matthews is now 13-2.
Genco is still doing a fine job, though,
with a 12-8 record. |

Scoring started slowly in this match as
Gambill only had a first period takedown
and a second period escape to his
credit, opening a 3-0 lead.
Gambill was masterful on his feet,
though, once almost scoring a takedown
on the edge of the mat by straining to
keep his feet in bounds, and later
succeeding in a similar scenario,
controlling Pipes' waist as the Bear
went out of bounds. An ankle-pick
led to Gambill's final takedown and a
9-2 margin before Gambill turned Pipes
over with a cross-body ride cross-face
and then switched to a double-grapevine
for the 4:55 fall. Gambill
remained undefeated with a 14-0 record.
Pipes' record stands at 8-8. |

Any synonyms for "dominant" that have
not previously been used to describe
Klein this season border on the
distasteful and rude. The only
thing missing from this dual meet was an
Outstanding Wrestler award (Klein has
three so far this season). With
single-leg takedowns and cross-face
cradles, Klein made sure he scored as
many points as possible for the
Crusaders in the event Fontenot proved
impossible to pin. Hence, by the
2:16 point in the match he led 12-0,
needing only three points for a 15 point
margin and a five point technical fall.
Spurred by his coaches to put a "tight"
hold on Fontentot, Klein forced a
half-nelson and scored a fall at 3:58,
as well as netting six points for
Brother Martin. Klein owns the
best record for the Crusaders at14-0.
Fontenot maintains a respectable record
at 10-8. |

Meyn might have expected to face nemesis
Brennan Taylor, but Taylor was
unavailable due to an eyebrow gash he
received at the Spartan Open.
Instead, Meyn faced sophomore Tristan
Williams, whose 1-1 record entailed a
loss to Division II state champion Seth
Bosarge of Live Oak and a quick pin of
Hahnville's Mario Concepcion. Meyn
was able to take advantage of his
opponent's lack of experience with a
single-leg takedown in the first 15
seconds, to which he added an additional
three back points before the first
period ended. Gamely trying to
escape in the second period, Meyn would
not relinquish ankle-control and turned
Williams over again to increase his lead
to 8-0. With a minute to go in the
second, Meyn turned Williams over again,
encircling Williams' arms with his, and
scored a fall after 3:36 had passed.
Meyn is another of the undefeated
Crusaders, now with a 13-0 record.
Williams dropped to 1-2 on the season. |

The defending state champion at 145
pounds last season, Claitor faced
sophomore Pierce Williams from the
Crusaders. Claitor scored his
first takedown in 30 seconds but the
sophomore made him work for his points.
Williams got in trouble a few times, but
Claitor was unable to put the match away
with a pin, and led 8-0 after two
periods. Claitor reversed Williams
in the third period, but Williams
returned the favor, turning "in" on a
cross-body ride attempt and slipping
behind Claitor. With nothing to
lose by trying a throw, Williams let
Claitor go, but the match ended before
any more points were recorded.
Claitor improved his record to 6-0 on
the season while Williams suffered only
his second defeat in 11 outings. |

With Mason Williams moving up to 160
pounds, the Crusaders put junior Anthony
Schneider on the mat to face Catholic
sophomore Denver Denison. This was
only Denison's second match of the
season, while Schneider had 10 to his
credit. Schneider took Denison
down in the first 15 seconds with a
single-leg and then applied a tight
cross-face cradle, ending the match at
1:45. Schneider improved his
record to 9-3 while Denison is 0-2 in
his first starts for the Bears. |

Given a little more experience the
senior Root of Catholic will be someone
to be wary of come February. But the
junior Williams already has that
experience, placing fourth at last
season's state tournament. Working an
inside single-leg, Williams scored a
takedown at 1:41 of the first round, but
Root was able to escape to trim the lead
to 2-1. Root would escape two more
times, and Williams once, but Williams
scored the takedowns in the match
(including a fireman's carry in the
second) and prevailed 7-3. It was
Williams' 10th win without a loss this
season. Root is 13-8, but most of
his losses have come against some well
established opponents. |

It is getting harder and harder to
believe the senior Comardelle has not
wrestled since his freshman year.
He has won 11 of his last 12 matches,
which include winning a Trygg Memorial
title. Comardelle and Catholic's
undefeated senior Matthew Moreau had one
common opponent. While Moreau beat
Live Oak's Brody Bonura,
Comardelle lost to him. One might
think that gave an edge to Moreau, yet
Comardelle just keeps getting better.
But it was close. In the first
period Comardelle scored a takedown and
Moreau only an escape. After an
escape by Comardelle in the second
round, each wrestler managed only two
more points apiece. But that was
enough for Comardelle to earn a 5-3 win
and improve his record to 14-3. It
was only Moureau's first setback,
though, and his record is a very healthy
4-1. |

Junior returning state runner-up Yehia
Riles was upset last weekend at the
Trygg Memorial. An upset Riles is
something few want to face. His
remaining Trygg opponents, no slouches
mind you, found that out via a fall and
a 12-1 major decision. Sophomore
Nicholas Danna got to face Riles after a
three day rest. That was
unfortunate, as Riles used his
considerable speed and strength to take
Danna down in the first 40 seconds, let
him go and take him down again after
only a minute had elapsed, and then
pinned him arm bar to a reverse
half-nelson in 1:32. Riles
improved to 14-1 with the fall while
Danna dropped to 2-3. |

Brother Martin's Josh Tapia was not
happy with his third place finish at the
Spartan Open, and his Trygg championship
lacked a little luster as his opponent
was forced to withdraw due to an injury
in a previous match. But there was
nothing wrong with the senior's
performance Wednesday night. He
took Catholic's Connor Ortego down by
sprawling and spinning around, and then
proceeded to stack him in 0:52.
Tapia is 9-1 while Ortego is 5-7 on the
season. |

When Brother Martin's Jacob Clapp's face
turns red, it is not necessarily a sign
of exertion. It is an omen, and a
bad omen at that for his competitors.
That happened about 1:10 into the first
round when, in a pretty rare move for a
"big" guy, Nick Cashio shot a deep
double-leg and lifted Clapp off of the
mat for a takedown. That was
enough for Clapp. He scored an
escape as the first round ended.
He score another escape to tie the match
at the beginning of the second, followed
by his own takedown in a more crushing
manner resulting in a 4-2 lead. On
top for the third period start he worked
a cross-face and wrist control to turn
Cashio over and score a fall at 4:25.
Clapp has a 7-1 record along with his
Trygg Memorial title. Cashio moved
to 4-5. |

In the final match of the evening it was
Crusader sophomore Matt Montalbano
against the as yet undefeated Catholic
sophomore K. J. Wilson. Wilson was
aggressive but was not strong enough to
complete a takedown against Montalbano,
and the first period ended in a
scoreless tie. On bottom to start
the second period, Wilson escaped in the
first 20 seconds but Montalbano was able
to take him down to end the round ahead
2-1. In the third Montalbano
escaped and followed that with another
takedown. As time ran out
Montalbano had a 5-1 win, improving his
record to 9-4. With the loss
Wilson is 3-1. |
