Marines improvise, adapt and overcome at the 2014 Masters Tournament

Fifteen wrestlers participated in four weight classes at the 2014 Masters/Old-Timers tournament on Saturday at the Southeast Regional Olympic Training Center on the campus of Rummel High School.  A total of 16 matches, consisting of three one-minute rounds, were contested.

Wrestlers represented Grace King High School, Sulphur High School, Jesuit High School, members of aspiring wrestling clubs from LSU, Tulane, UNO and Southeastern, as well as two members of the U.S. Marine Corps who are stationed in Belle Chasse.

Prior to the first match LHSAA wrestling rules interpreter and former official Cliff Strider addressed the participants re officiating and what college clubs need to do to get school recognition and then National Collegiate Wrestling Association recognition to allow interschool competitions.

Grace King's Angelo Medina-Perez ('13) won the "Ezra Garza Lightest Guy in the Tournament Award" for gamely wrestling in the 130-160 lbs. weight class and giving up 20-30 lbs. against his opponents.

The match that did not happen

After the tournament officially ended (when the t-shirts were given to the competitors) Yazan Hamide wrestled his fifth match of the day against Destrehan sophomore Chase Menedez.  Destrehan coach John Fogarty officiated the match.
