A synopsis of this weekend's wrestling events:

Brusly Invitational - Brusly High School, Brusly, Louisiana

Twenty-three teams are scheduled to compete in the 38th annual Brusly Invitational.  All of them, with the exception of Centreville, Mississippi, are Division III teams, meaning this could be a very good preview of the February Division III state championships.  It will mark the first tournament match-up between perennial Division III powerhouse Brusly and up-and-coming De la Salle, who placed second to the Panthers in the 2014 Division III state championships.  It will also allow some north and west Louisiana teams a chance to get to know one another.

Lafayette Parish Duals

Comeaux will be seeking their 14th consecutive Greg Lavergne Lafayette Parish Duals championship on Friday and Saturday at Lafayette High School.  Competitors vying to unseat the Spartans include Division II state champion Teurlings Catholic, Lafayette High School, who finished second to the Spartans at the Jacob McMillan Memorial on December 20th, Acadiana, Carencro and Northside are scheduled to compete.

[Friday results which may or may not be a part of the Lafayette Parish Duals: Comeaux 27-Teurlings Catholic 24; Lafayette 60-Teurlings Catholic-B 6; Lafayette 72-Northside 9.]

Jambalaya Cup - East Ascension High School, Gonzales, Louisiana

St. Amant is the favorite in the annual Jambalaya Cup tri-meet between Dutchtown, East Ascension and St. Amant, starting at 1:30 p.m. at East Ascension High School.  The teams have not met in a dual meet format this year but the Gators have finished ahead of the Griffins and the Spartans in the Central Wildcat Open, the Dutchtown Griffin Open (EA did not compete) and the East Ascension Spartan Open.  (St. Amant and East Ascension both participated in the Catholic Duals on December 6th but the two teams did not face each other.)  Should the Gators prevail it will mark the third year in a row a different team is allowed to take the Jambalaya Cup home with them.  Dutchtown won the event in 2013 and East Ascension was the 2014 winner.

Leading St. Amant are Joshua Averett (138 lbs.), Clint Brownell (145 lbs.), Sage Nugent (152 lbs.) and Jordan Averette (182 lbs.).  The Griffins of Dutchtown are led by 2014 Division I runner-up Brandon Cowell (152 lbs.) and Kaleb Faul (160 lbs.).  The Spartans are led by senior and 2014 Division I third-place winner Jacob Bernard (132 lbs.).

Parkway Division II Lone Survivor Tournament

Fifteen schools will vie for the second Parkway Lone Survivor tournament title and all except airline are Division II schools.  Last year's winner, Live Oak, should face a tough challenge from host Parkway as well as Airline.

Belle Chasse Cardinal Duals

This year's Cardinal Duals, held at Belle Chasse High School on Saturday, features a mix of Divisions I, II and III with Grace King, Pearl River, Holy Cross B team, Hahnville, Chalmette, Ehret, Thomas Jefferson and host Belle Chasse participating.

District 6-5A Championships at St. Paul's

Northshore supremacy is on the line again as Covington, Fontainebleau, Mandeville, Northshore and St. Paul's vie for District 6-5A bragging rights.

Southeastern Duals - Thompson, Alabama

The Brother Martin Crusaders are 3-0 after Friday's matches at the Southeastern Duals (held at Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama).  The Crusaders defeated Buckhorn High School (Alabama) 36-27, Scottsboro (Alabama) 64-18 and St. Benedict (TN) 68-6.

Host team Thompson may get a change to avenge Brother Martin's 51-15 thrashing of them in the finals of the 2014 Deep South Bayou Duals, but it will not merit much satisfaction as the Crusaders did not send their starting line-up.  Tennessee's Baylor High School appears to be another primary contender.
