2015 Ken Cole Invitational - 126 Pounds |
February 15th, 2015 | Written by: Editor |
If the editor has seemed partial to this weight class it is because he recalls what it was like to be unseeded in this event in 1980 and 1981. This year, however, the winner of the "Who'd a thunk it" award goes to Jesuit's unseeded, B-team champion Joseph Dupre. Not only did Dupre win, but he did so in very dramatic fashion, coming from behind in the waning seconds of his semifinals and finals matches, and surviving a second round match against a two-time defending Division I state champion in Mason Mauro of Shaw (formerly of Brother Martin). Ahead 5-3 against the third-seeded Mauro in the third period, Mauro has one of Dupre's legs in the air but Dupre would not succumb to a takedown. Trailing second-seeded Micah Roby of Baton Rouge in the third, Dupre found a way to put the Bulldog on his back for a 5:26 fall. In the finals against Catholic's fourth-seeded Joshua Matthews, himself a last-second winner over top-seeded Jacob Bernard of East Ascension, Dupre found late takedown and back points to edge Matthews by one.
