Division I

Season Synopsis

Once December and the Trey Culotta Invitational came around, this weight class was owned by Brother Martin's returning state champion sophomore, Steven Shields.  After winning five matches and the Big Twelve tournament in Texas, Shields started off slowly against his main Division I competition.  He gave Rummel's Robert Fairchild, the winner of the Warrior and Spartan opens, his first loss 3-2 in the Trey Culotta finals.  After winning Tennessee's Blackhorse Invitational he narrowly defeated Jesuit's Austin Pfister 7-5 in a dual meet.  He went undefeated in Brother Martin's championship run at the Deep South Bayou Duals.  Shields suffered his only loss of the season to Wyoming Seminary's Jack Davis at Holy Innocents' Prep Slam VII.  In the Louisiana Classic Shields registered two falls, 8-2 and 6-2 decisions, and a 7-0 defeat of Live Oak's Colt Olinde in the finals.

Holy Cross' Beau Bush started off in the meat-grinder weight class of 120 lbs. this season, and in doing so won championships at the Mandeville and the Spartan opens, including wins over Jesuit's Eli Larriviere, East Ascension's Landon Wheat and Live Oak's Colt Olinde.  Bush dropped to 113 lbs. for the Ken Cole, where he placed second to Olinde, and for the St. Paul's Invitational where he got his first taste of Shields in a 7-2 loss.

Preliminary Rounds

An upset was recorded in the second round when #6 Cameron Carpenter of Catholic lost to Lafayette's Bailey Coker in 4:00.  (Carpenter, however, finished fifth - one spot better than he was seeded.)

Finals

(1) Steven Shields (BM) defeated (2) Beau Bush (HC) 5-2
Shields scored first on a double-leg takedown after 50 seconds had passed in the first period, and added an escape and another takedown in the second round for a 5-0 lead.  In the third period Bush scored an escape point and was awarded a penalty point, but that was all the Brother Martin sophomore would allow.  Shields finished the season 29-0 against Louisiana competition and 43-1 against all opponents.  Bush was 21-4 and 24-7.

Brother Martin's Paul Klein made history this season by winning his fourth Division I state title.  With two already under his belt and two more to go, Shields is in fine shape to match that feat come 2017.

Division II

Season Synopsis

Defending Division II state champion Colt Olinde of Live Oak started the season at 120 lbs. and, just to show the quality of the competition in that weight class, Olinde did not win a tournament until the Zachary Big Horse Open on December 20th.  Olinde was able to avenge early season losses to Brusly's Austin Franklin (twice), Basile's Raymond Bushnell and, in the Ken Cole finals, against Beau Bush.  He placed second to Shields in the Louisiana Classic, in which he defeated Eli Larriviere and Robert Fairchild, and then went on to win his first Greater Baton Rouge championship.

Josh Hebert's season was marred only by very solid Division I wrestlers (Fairchild. Larriviere, Jared Thieler of St. Paul's and Jeffrey Argrave of Holy Cross, and by 2013 Division III state champion Logan Griffin of Thomas Jefferson).  He did, however, win the Teurlings Catholic Rebel Open, defeating Lafayette's Bailey Coke and Basile's Gavin Christ in the semifinals and finals, respectively.

Preliminary Rounds

No upsets were recorded in the first round of this weight class.

Division III

Season Synopsis

The 2014 Division III state champion at 106 lbs., Austin Franklin of Brusly, also started the season at 120 lbs.  He fared well in that weight class, knocking off Colt Olinde once as well as Catholic's Dominic Dewey, and at the Deep South Bayou Duals he wrestled a great match against Brother Martin's Stephen Rumney, albeit he lost 8-6.  After that event Franklin went down to 113 lbs. at which he won the Brusly Invitational and placed third at the Louisiana Classic, losing to Shields in the semifinals and defeating Fairchild in the consolation finals.  Three weeks later the Ken Cole was not his best event as he lost to Fontainebleau's Gabe Peterson in the quarterfinals and then to Division III foe Gavin Becker of North Vermillion - a match that would place Becker atop the seeds in the Division III state championships.  At the Greater Baton Rouge Championships Franklin placed third behind Olinde and Catholic's Cameron Carpenter.

North Vermillion's Gavin Becker competed at 120 lbs. with some success, placing second to Basile's Raymond Bushnell at the Brusly Invitational, and fourth at the Jacob McMillan Memorial and the Teurlings Catholic Rebel Open.  At the Ken Cole Becker competed at 113 lbs. and placed fifth after registering a first round pin over Franklin.  A week later Becker won the Lafayette Metro Tournament.

Preliminary Rounds

No seeds were defeated in the first round.

Finals

(2) Austin Franklin (BRU) defeated (1) Gavin Becker (NV) 9-7
This match did not follow the same script as the Ken Cole match between these two wrestlers - this was close all the way.  At the end of two periods the wrestlers were tied at 5-5.  On bottom to start the third period, Franklin took a 6-5 lead with an escape, which he then followed with a takedown for an 8-5 lead.  Becker reversed Franklin to move closer at 8-7, but Franklin escaped and had a 9-7 victory as time ran out.  Like the Schermer brothers before him, Franklin in looking at four consecutive Division III championships.
