Division I
Season Synopsis
For the vast majority of the season this weight class belonged to Brother
Martin junior Taylor Gambill. Before the Trey Culotta, his first Louisiana
appearance of the season, Gambill placed second in the Cinco Ranch Big 12 and
the Blackhorse Invitational. Gambill won the Culotta, went undefeated in
the Deep South Bayou Duals and placed fifth in the Holy Innocents Prep Slam VII.
A dual meet with Holy Cross preceded the Louisiana Classic, at which he got his
first look at the Tigers' Collin Guerra. Guerra led for the first five
minutes and 55 seconds of the match before Gambill scored a reversal which sent
the match into overtime. In that round Gambill scored the Sudden Victory
takedown for the win.
At the Louisiana Classic Gambill's first big test was in the quarterfinals
against his teammate for the last several years, Mason Mauro, a two-time
Division I state champion for the Crusaders who had transferred to Archbishop
Shaw for his senior season. Gambill got past Mauro in 4:20, but then
needed a Sudden Victory period to get past the 2014 third place finisher at 120
lbs., Jacob Bernard of East Ascension. That setup another match with
Guerra in which Gambill dominated via a 9-2 win. After a dual meet versus
Rummel, Gambill was undefeated against Louisiana competition with a record of
16-0. It seemed as if Gambill and Guerra, whose only losses in Louisiana were to
Gambill, would be the two to meet in the Division I finals
The 126 lbs. weight class, however, was about to get assaulted from both
sides.
At 132 lbs. Holy Cross' Dylan Soileau was considered one who might give
Brother Martin's Paul Klein some trouble as Klein vied for his fourth Division I
championship. Soileau, who was a second seed in Division II as a freshman
in 2012, and who missed the 2013 and 2014 state championships due to an injury
and an illness, started the season with nine wins in succession over Louisiana
opponents, and two more over out-of-state opponents in Las Vegas. His next
match was against Klein and while he was very aggressive against the Crusader,
Klein took advantage of a missed lateral drop to pin Soileau in 3:02.
Trying to rebound at The Louisiana Classic, Soileau notched a high quality win
with a 13-2 decision over Teurlings Catholic's Brock Bonin, but he fell twice,
once in the quarterfinals and then in the consolation finals, to Brusly's Kendon
Kayser. A week later Holy Cross made their weight changes and Soileau was down
to 126 lbs., at which he won the GNO Championships. Having defeated
Rummel's and Jesuit's best earlier in the season, Soileau netted a #3 seed in
his new weight class.
Hanging around as a second-stringer behind Ben D'Antonio at 120 lbs. and
senior Peyton Markey at 126 lbs., Jesuit junior Joseph Dupre was happy to get a
chance to wrestle at all. Due to the absence of D'Antonio at the Louisiana
Classic, Dupre competed at 120 lbs. and placed sixth. A week later at the
GNO Championships, also at 120 lbs., and just before Soileau defeated Markey in
the 126 lbs. finals, Dupre took first place over teammate Jordan Giewat.
With the return of D'Antonio Dupre moved back to 126 lbs. to compete as a
non-scoring wrestler (behind Markey) at the Ken Cole. After an easy
technical fall in his first match, the unseeded Dupre surprised everyone by
simply outwrestling Shaw's Mason Mauro, the two-time Division I state champion. After that he knocked off the sixth seed,
Steven Van Zandt of St. Paul's, and then, coming from behind in the third
period, he defeated second-seeded Micah Roby in the semifinals. In the
finals Dupre faced a seasoned Joshua Matthews of Catholic, who had defeated
Markey in the quarterfinals and then top-seeded Jacob Bernard of East Ascension
in the waning seconds of the semifinals. Dupre again fell behind early
but, as should be expected by the son of a Jesuit state champion (Dupre's father
Arthur won titles for the Blue Jays in 1973 and 1974), he never quit and eked
out a 10-9 win for the championship which sealed his fate at Jesuit's 126 lbs.
contender at the upcoming state championships.
Dupre, however, due to a 10-4 loss to Soileau on February 4th, was the fourth
seed and found himself on Gambill's side of the bracket.
Preliminary Rounds
No major upsets were recorded in the first two rounds.

Quarterfinals
No upsets were recorded in the quarterfinals, albeit Dupre and the
fifth-seeded Roby provided a very entertaining match.
(1) Taylor Gambill (BM) defeated Joseph Davis-Lucas (JE) in 5:47 |
(4) Joseph Dupre (JES) defeated (5) Micah Roby (BR) 8-4 |
(3) Dylan Soileau (HC) defeated (6) Joshua Matthews (CAT) 17-10 |

Semifinals
In a high scoring match,
Dupre caught the top-seeded Gambill in a headlock in the third period to score
five points and advance to the finals with a 16-13 upset win. On the other side
of the bracket, Soileau recorded another upset when he bested the second-seeded Bernard 12-6.

Consolation Rounds
In the consolation finals Bernard put Gambill on his back early with a head
throw but could not finish him off. In the third period Gambill returned
the favor and was able to score a fall with 12 seconds remaining.
For fifth place Matthews defeated Roby 9-5 to even their season's series at
2-2.

Finals
(3) Dylan Soileau (HC) defeated (4) Joseph
Dupre (JES) 10-4 |
The senior Tiger again proved too much
for the junior Dupre as Soileau built up a 6-1 lead after the
first two-and-one-half minutes. Soileau only allowed Dupre
escapes during the match, and he took advantage of them all with
ensuing takedowns to register a 10-4 victory and a Division I
state championship. Not enough can be said about Dupre's
effort, though, as in a mere three weeks he went from
second-string to second in the state. Soileau finished the
season 26-3 against Louisiana competition and 28-5 against all
competitors. DUpre was 25-8 and 27-14. |

Division II
Season Synopsis
January 7th was probably a "wake-up call" for a lot of Division II 126 lbs.
wrestlers. Parkway's Matthew Pitts, Teurlings Catholic's Luke Kilchrist
and Grace King's Jonathan Davadi had yet to lose to a Division II wrestler, but
on January 7th was the day Mason Mauro, the two-time Division I state champion for
Brother Martin, made his wrestling debut for Shaw. Mauro missed the first
two months of the season so he could not have been expected to perform great at
the Louisiana Classic (in which he placed sixth) or the Ken Cole (in which he
placed fifth). After the Louisiana Classic Mauro got his first and, until
the state finals, his hardest Division II match, an 18-3 technical fall over
Pitts. But six matches at the Louisiana Classic and seven at the Ken Cole
can whip a wrestler back into shape quickly. By the state championships
Mauro was ready.
Teurlings Catholic's Luke Kilchrist was seeded second as he had
beaten some quality Division I opponents, including Christopher Marson of Denham
Springs, Leaf Ballast of Fontainebleau, Mark Stevens of Rummel and Briar Babin
of St. Amant. Come the state tournament, third-seeded Jonathan Davidi of
Grace King had no wins over Division I opponents. Fourth-seeded Matthew
Pitts had two wins over Division I opponents, but Davadi's other wins were
deemed more impressive and merited a higher seeding.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were to be had in the first round, the quarterfinals or the
semifinals.

In the first period Mauro scored a
takedown on Kilchrist for a 2-0 lead. Kilchrist escaped
but Mauro took him down again to build a 4-1 lead upon entering
the second period. In that period Mauro started scoring at
will, and at its end he led the Rebel junior 11-3. By the
time it was over Mauro had a 15-6 victory and his third
consecutive state championship. Mauro finished his senior
season with a 21-4 record against Louisiana opponents and was
21-5 against all comers. Kilchrist finished with a 19-17
record. |

Division III
Season Synopsis
There were probably more than a few Division III wrestlers who were taken
aback when the state seeds were released showing Brusly's defending state
champion Kendon Kayser at 126 lbs. instead of the 132 lbs. at which he had
participated all season. Kayser, like Cody Hill last year, wanted to get a
shot or two against Brother Martin's Paul Klein and hence remained at 132 lbs. Aside from that, on paper
at least, he did not seem to have a lot of reasons to drop to 126 lbs.
Unexpectedly, perhaps, he did drop a 2-1 match to East Ascension's Jacob Bernard
at the Catholic Duals, and was surprised by an unexpected fall at the hands of
Brock Bonin of Teurlings Catholic. While he did not get another shot at
Bernard, he did avenge his loss to Bonin with a 7-3 semifinals win at the Ken
Cole. Had Kayser not dropped to 126 Brusly would have been without a
competitor in that weight class unless they moved up freshman David Kent, who
had only participated at 106 lbs. and 113 lbs. in his five matches of the
season. (Kent went 120 lbs. instead, giving Brusly a full 14-man roster in
an event that would not prove to be a typical runaway for the Panthers.)
On the other side of the Bracket Ouachita Christian freshman Matthew Matherne
had only lost to Louisiana wrestlers from Division I, and good one at that in
Joseph Dupre, Micah Roby and Javarious Jones. John Watson of Lakeside (4th in
2014) and Rhett Maturin of North Vermillion (2nd in 2014) comprised the third
and fourth seeds of the weight class.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first round, the quarterfinals or the
semifinals.

Consolation Rounds
While Kayser easily won this weight class, the most surprising wrestler was
Basile's sixth-seeded junior Zack Vinson of Basile who, after losing to Watson
via a fall in the quarterfinals, won two consolation matches prior to a 3-0
consolation semifinals win over #4 Maturin to set-up a 5-2 revenge win against
Watson to place third.
