Division I

Season Synopsis

Last season Brother Martin's Paul Klein was one point away from an undefeated season, losing only in a Sudden Victory round to Holy Cross' George Benoit in the Ken Cole finals.  He later avenged that match with wins at a dual meet and in the 2014 state finals.   This season, he had his fair share of those who wanted to again deny him of a perfect record.

First and foremost was Brusly sophomore Kendon Kayser.  Kayser could have wrestled 126 lbs. all season with a decent chance of going undefeated himself, but the prospect of beating Klein was too tempting.  Kayser had chances at the Deep South Bayou Duals and at the Louisiana Classic, but came up short 7-5 and 5-1, with the last match, by the accounts of those who were there, a harder win for Klein than the first.  Aside from Kayser, Klein also got past East Ascension senior Jacob Bernard, a third place finisher at 120 lbs. last season, at the Griffin Open and the Trey Culotta.  At the Culotta Klein dominated the soon-to-be three time Division II state champion, Brock Bonin of Teurlings Catholic, with a technical fall.  In fact, until his fourth state championship finals match, Klein had defeated every Louisiana opponent, aside from Kayser, by a major decision, a technical fall or a pin.

A new challenge emerged when Holy Cross decided to drop a group of their wrestlers down a weight class for the Ken Cole.  Holy Cross' Joey Foret only had one loss at 138 lbs. in the Louisiana Classic finals to Klein's teammate Blaise Eisensohn.  Foret's debut at 132 lbs. was a good one, as he placed second to Kayser at the Ken Cole.  If anyone was to challenge Klein this season, why not a fearless sophomore?

Preliminary Rounds

A mild upset was recorded in the second round when Gregory Russ, Jr. of McKinley defeated #8 Michael Sheppard of Fontainebleau 5-1.

Finals

(1) Paul Klein (BM) defeated (2) Joey Foret (HC) 10-5
Klein and Foret met first in the finals of the St. Paul's Invitational on February 7th, and Klein dominated the Holy Cross sophomore 13-3 in that match.  In this match Klein started strong, opening up a 4-1 lead after the first period.  Midway through the second period Klein had upped his lead to 8-1.  As time ran out in the period Foret scored a reversal to lessen Klein's lead to 8-3.  Foret escaped to start the last period, but Klein came back with a double-leg lift to take a 10-4 lead.  After a brief delay due to an injury to Klein's left leg, Foret managed another escape, but that was all Klein would allow.  Time ran out in the last period and Klein had his fourth consecutive Division I state championship.  Klein finally had his undefeated season: 21-0 against Louisiana wrestlers and 37-0 everyone who stepped onto the mat against him.  Foret completed his sophomore year with a 29-3 record against Louisiana opponents and a 31-7 overall record.

Division II

Season Synopsis

Junior Brock Bonin of Teurlings Catholic won Division II state championships his freshman and sophomore years, and there was no indication this season that he would settle for anything less this year.  His only losses on the season were to the Division I 132 lbs. state champion (Klein), the Division I 132 lbs. runner-up (Foret), the Division I 126 lbs. state champion (Soileau), the Division III 126 lbs. state champion (Kayser, against whom Bonin also had a win) and to a Madill, Oklahoma, wrestler who placed second at the Louisiana Classic.

Bonin's main competition was Sam Houston's Andrew Aucoin, a Division II runner-up in 2013 and 2014.  Bonin defeated Aucoin twice before the state tournament, but Bonin's initial 11-5 victory in the Rebel Open was pared down to a 5-3 SV victory in the Ken Cole consolation finals that many viewers thought should have gone Aucoin's way before a Sudden Victory round was needed.

Preliminary Rounds

One upset was recorded when Central's Matthew Boudreaux defeated #7 Toby Fontenot of Parkway 15-8

Round 1: (4) Chase Bates (ND) defeated Malcom Chaisson (CAR) in 2:46

Finals

(1) Brock Bonin (TC) defeated (2) Andrew Aucoin (SH) 13-4
Bonin left nothing to chance in this rematch of the Ken Cole consolation final.  He developed a 5-0 lead after the first period, and in the second scored a takedown after each of Aucoin's two escapes to forge a 9-2 lead.  A minute into the third period Bonin reversed Aucoin, who would score one additional escape point before the match ended 11-3 in Bonin's favor.  This was the Teurlings Catholic Rebel's third consecutive Division II championship.  Bonin finished the season 30-4 against Louisiana competitors and 32-5 against all comers.  Aucoin finished the season 35-8 and 37-8.

Division III

Season Synopsis

With 30 wins over Louisiana competitors, and with his only Division III losses to one Kendon Kayser of Brusly and 126 lbs. Division III finalist Matthew Matherne of Ouachita Christian (a close 7-5 first round Trygg Memorial tournament loss in which he placed third), De la Salle's Glenn Gebo was having a stellar Division III season.  Gebo only lost to one Division III opponent besides Kayser, .  Of his seven other losses to Louisiana wrestlers, he lost to some good ones: Division I's Daniel Gunn of Catholic (twice), Joshua Averett of St. Amant, Scott Prouty of Airline and Jake Verret of Comeaux; Division II's Brock Bonin (twice).  Gebo won the Greater New Orleans Division III District tournament and placed second at the Brusly Invitational.

Brusly's Kyle Cascio, who had not competed at 132 lbs. until the state tournament, was given the second seed over Ouachita Christian's Matthew Webre due to victories over St. Louis' Augustus Sole and McKinley's De'Quinton Gie, both of whom Webre had lost to during the season.  Those matches were at 138 lbs. though, and Webre at least had a couple of weeks competing at 132 lbs. "under his belt" prior to the state championships.

Preliminary Rounds

No upsets were recorded in the first round of competition.

Finals

(1) Glenn Gebo (DLS) defeated (3) Matthew Webre (OC) 7-4
Gebo and Webre only had one common opponent in Airline's Scott Prouty, and Gebo fared better against Prouty by two points.  Gebo's experience, however, having wrestled 42 matches on the year vs. Webre's 28, may have made the difference in Gebo's 5-2 victory.  Gebo finished the season 33-9 against Louisiana competition and 31-11 against Louisiana and out-of-state competitors.  Webre finished 16-10 and 19-12.
