Division I
Season Synopsis
This weight class was another two-man race all season.
In 2014 Hahnville's Kendrick Jones, the third seed at 195 lbs., went for
broke in the Division I finals with an immediate takedown shot in the Sudden Victory period to defeat
Holy Cross' Daniel Relayson. This season, Jones had the swagger of a
defending state champion. Although at times he would put himself in a
little trouble, he never seemed worried when he did, and that led to a perfect
49-0 season against Louisiana opponents and a 57-0 total record. Jones won
the Griffin Open, the Jefferson Invitational, the Zachary Big Horse, the Trey
Culotta, went undefeated in the Deep South Bayou Duals, won the Louisiana
Classic, went undefeated in the Wewahitchka, Florida, Gator Bowl and won the
District 7-8 Tournament. Most importantly, however, in the Louisiana
Classic finals, he defeated Jesuit's 2014 Division I runner-up Guy Patron, Jr.,
8-4.
Aside from the loss to Jones in the Louisiana Classic finals, Jesuit's Guy
Patron, Jr. only lost one other match. That was to Stillwater, Oklahoma's
Jordan Dieringer, the younger brother of Oklahoma State's 2015 Division I NCAA
champion Alex Dieringer, in the finals of the Kansas City Stampede tournament.
Patron won the Warrior Open, the Mandeville Open, destroyed the competition
at the South Walton Border Wars, won the Greater New Orleans Championship, the
Ken Cole and the St. Paul's Invitational.
Preliminary Rounds
A minor upset was recorded in the second round when unseeded Mason Williams
of Holy Cross defeated #7 Austin Guedry of East Ascension 4-1.

Finals
(1) Kendrick Jones (HNV) defeated (2) Guy
Patron, Jr. (JES) 10-8 |
Jones started the scoring with a
double-leg takedown in the first 25 seconds, but about 25
seconds later Patron switched Jones and the first period ended
in a 2-2 tie. In the second period Jones took a 4-2 lead
via a reversal, but Patron crept closer with an escape, and the
second period ended with Jones ahead 4-3. Patron tied the
score at 4-4 with an escape within 15 seconds of the start of
the third period, but Jones was able to score another takedown
for a 6-4 lead. Patron again cut the lead to one point,
6-5, with an escape, but it was Jones taking an 8-5 lead with
another double-leg takedown with 1:12 remaining. Patron
escaped again 10 seconds later, making the difference two points
at 8-6, but Jones, with 25 seconds remaining, scored yet another
takedown for a 10-6 lead. With eight seconds remaining
Patron reversed Jones again, but time ran out and Jones had his
second Division I state title via a10-8 score. Jones finished the season 53-0
against Louisiana opponents and 61-0 against all opponents.
Patron finished 30-3 and 45-4. |

Division II
Season Synopsis
Aside from his loss to Dieringer of Oklahoma, Brother Martin's Yehia Riles'
closest match was a 3-1 tie-breaker win in the finals of the Dutchtown Griffin
Open. That was against Live Oak's Brody Bonura, a Division II fourth-place
finisher in 2013 and a runner-up in 2014. Bonura's only other loss of the
season was also to Riles in the finals of the Louisiana Classic. His 47
wins against Louisiana opponents included matches over Division I runner-up
Brandon Verges of Fontainebleau, Division I semifinalists Keegan Gilligan of
Airline and Tyler Ventress of McKinley, Jordan Averett of St. Amant and the 170
lbs. Division I state champion Brice Duhe of Holy Cross (albeit Duhe moved up a
weight for that match). Bonura won the Warrior Open, the Central Wildcat
Open, the Spartan Open, the Zachary Big Horse, was undefeated at the Deep South
Bayou Duals, won the Lone Survivor, the Ken Cole and the Greater Baton Rouge
Championships.
However, each of those wins was at 182 lbs. For the state tournament,
in an effort to help Live Oak do as well as possible as a team, Bonura competed
in the 195 lbs. weight class.
The second seed was St. Thomas More senior David Quiring who, at least since
his sophomore year, had put together a very impressive wrestling career on a
team with very few members. This season Quiring did not compete until
January 10th, but he started off well in winning the Lone Survivor Tournament at
Parkway, and he also won the Lafayette Metro tournament. His only loss
to a Louisiana wrestler in his seven matches prior to the state tournament was
at the Louisiana Classic in which Brother Martin's Travis Viener, the Division I
195 lbs. third-place finisher, defeated him 5-2.
Preliminary Rounds
One upset was recorded in the first round when unseeded Cole weber of
Teurlings Catholic defeated #4 Justin Gaskin of North DeSoto 4-2.

Finals
(1) Brody Bonura (LO) defeated (2) David
Quiring (StM) 3-2 |
This was wholly a defensive contest.
Bonura scored an escape with 1:44 remaining in the second period
to take a 1-0 lead. Quiring tied the score in the third
period with an escape, but then Bonura scored the only takedown
of the match to pull ahead 3-1. Quiring scored another
escape with 14 seconds remaining, but Bonura was able to hold
off Quiring's takedown attempts to secure the championship 3-2.
Bonura finished the year 50-2 against Louisiana opponents and
58-2 overall. Quiring was 8-2 and 8-3. |

Division III
Season Synopsis
Despite having only a 5-1 record prior to the state championships
Fisher's Matt Adams was a defending Division III state champion, and his only
loss was to Division I senior Travis Viener of Brother Martin at the St.
Paul's Invitational (in which Adams placed third). One of those wins was a
fall in 1:24 over South Plaquemine's Braxton Williamson.
Calvary Baptist's Justice Henson also had a pretty good, albeit also rather
short, season. Henson was 13-3 and, while two of his losses were to
Division I and II competitors, his other loss was to Williamson. Henson,
however, avenged that loss at the Brusly Invitational and thus was seeded
second. Lane Joubert of Basile was seeded third as he beat #4 Williamson
at the Brusly Invitational.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first round.
