November 25th, 2014 | Written by: Editor

Holy Cross, Catholic, Teurlings Catholic and Live Oak are expected to vie for the team title at the 2014 Spartan Open to be held tomorrow at East Ascension High School.

Two 2013 Spartan champions seeking a repeat are Josh Matthews of Catholic and Brice Duhe of Holy Cross.

Returning 2013 East Ascension Spartan Open Champions
Josh Matthews of Catholic (left against East Ascension's Jacob Bernard) and Brice Duhe of Holy Cross (right against Brother Martin's Travis Quarterman) are expected to return for the 2014 Spartan Open

Complimenting Duhe is a strong contingent of Tigers who placed at the Spartan in 2013 including runners-up Collin Guerra and Travis Gardner, third-place finishers Chris Zea and George Benoit, and Beau Bush, who placed fourth.  Guerra, Zea, Benoit and Bush all won titles at this year's Mandeville Open.

Matthew Mire of Catholic, the 2013 152 lbs. Division I state champion, and Brandon Cowell, the 2013 145 lbs. Division I runner-up, may be slated to meet for the third time this season.  Their current series is tied at one apiece, with Mire besting Cowell in the Warrior Open semifinals and Cowell returning the favor in the Central Wildcat finals.  The addition of Benoit may christen 152 lbs. as the de facto hardest weight class in the state.

Returning 2013 East Ascension Spartan Open Placers
Returning placers from 2013 should include (left to right, top to bottom): Colt Olinde (Live Oak), Robert Fairchild (Rummel), Chris Zea (Holy Cross), Luke Kilchrist (Teurlings Catholic), Jacob Bernard (East Ascension) and Josh Matthews (Catholic), Raymond Bushnell (Basile), and Beau Bush, Collin Guerra (Holy Cross), George Benoit (Holy Cross), Brandon Cowell (Dutchtown), Brody Bonura (Live Oak), Travis Gardner (Holy Cross).

Sulphur and Lafayette have the Spartan on their schedules, and that could mean Division I state third-place finishers Brennan Taylor (Sulphur), Trey Duhon (Sulphur) and Rodrigo Diaz (Lafayette) will be added to the mix.
