Louisiana teams placed four wrestlers in the finals of the 2nd annual South Walton Border Wars and came away with four championships, as well as another Outstanding Wrestler award. Starting with a win at 106 pounds, in case anyone then forgot about the Louisiana teams, they were reminded again at 195 pounds, and then at 220 pounds, and an exclamation point was added at 285 pounds.
Vestavia Hills, Alabama, won the team title by a mere one-half point over Springstead and Lake Highland Prep., who tied for second place. Jesuit place fourth while Rummel and St. Paul's placed ninth and tenth, respectively. Vestavia Hills is scheduled to compete in this year's Trey Culotta Invitational on December 22nd and 23rd at Brother Martin.
Freshman Blake Mateau of Rummel started the finals matches off with a fall in the 106 pounds weight class. Ten other finals matches ensued until it was time for Jesuit junior Guy Patron, Jr. who devastated everyone in the 195 pounds weight class en route to an Outstanding Wrestler award, the second for a Louisiana wrestler in as many years (Kendon Lee-Kayser of Brusly won an OW award in 2013). Patron, Jr.'s win was followed by another championship by St. Paul's Colin Francis, and Francis was followed another Blue Jay champion, Dominic Carmello.
Also garnering "hardware" for the Blue Jays were Brody Martin (106 pounds) and Brandon Wolff (138 pounds), who each placed third.
South Walton's William Pickren, a 2013 Trygg Memorial champion and a Deep South Bayou Duals and Jazz Town Duals veteran, won the 120 pounds championship.
