Crusaders lead Culotta after Monday's pools

Brother Martin has a somewhat comfortable 44 point lead over Allen High School of Allen, Texas, going into Tuesday's championship round of the Trey Culotta Invitational, but the Eagles stack up well with the Crusaders, at least as far as Tuesday's seedings go.

The Crusaders have six top seeds to Allen's four.  Allen, however, has five second seeds to Brother Martin's two.  In all Bother Martin has 13 wrestlers seeded in the top four spots; Allen has 10, followed by Vestavia Hills with nine and Rummel with eight.

Odds are it will be Brother Martin and Allen vying for the team championship on Tuesday, but the next three placements are pretty up in the air.  Consider, for instance, that aside from Rummel and Teurlings Catholic at the Spartan Open (in which the Raiders outscored the Rebels by only eight points), none of the top five schools have competed against each other yet.  This is very much an "on paper" seeding event, so a lot of things can happen contrary to what might be expected from Friday's results.  Teurlings Catholic, for instance, only has one top-four seed in David Bonin at 132 pounds (seeded 4th), but the Rebels are nonetheless tied with Rummel for fourth place (189.5 points) and have 10 grapplers vying for the top spot.  St. Paul's, only four points behind Rummel and Teurlings Catholic, and with only a #3 seed, has 12 wrestlers in the championship brackets.

Friday was relatively upset free, but there were some unexpected results which kept some of the top-four seeds out of the championship brackets:

The 132 lbs. and 170 lbs. weight classes each had 16 entrants, and hence four pools of four wrestlers each were held on Friday.  Due to the fact that sixteen places need to be decided in those weight classes, instead of just 12 as in the others, the first round of the championship brackets were held on Friday.  In both weight classes the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals of their respective championship brackets.
