An almost brand new team and two young and rebuilding teams met
Wednesday evening at the Holy Rosary gymnasium for a tri-meet.
While match scores were kept, the majority of the official matches were forfeits,
hence the
few official ones were mixed with several exhibition matches. The
match scores really were not of major importance - this
was an event scheduled to provide experience.

Crescent City Christian School has had
a wrestling team before, but only for a year in the 1975-76
season. Coached by Josh Hamrick, the Pioneers' new team
consists of four freshmen, two sophomores and two juniors.
Hamrick's son, freshman Ryan, wrestled for John Curtis last
season. |

East Jefferson has been around since
1965 and won state championships in 1966 and 1978. After
the 1981 season, however, the Warriors struggled, but second-year
coach Nick Settoon has a team comprised solely of freshmen and
sophomores with which to rebuild. As such he is wasting
little time in getting experience for his Warriors.
Sophomore Nick Shields, for example, already had 20 matches
under his belt before this event- seventeen of them wins - and
the Pearl River Open championship to his credit. (His three losses, by
the way were to two Brother Martin wrestlers - if one has to pick
a team to which to lose, one cannot do better than that.) |

Holy Rosary is in its seventh year of
existence under Coach Nick Accardo. After losing two-time
state placer Reid DiMaggio to graduation last year the team roster
consists of a 7th-grader, and 8th-grader, one freshman and five
sophomores. Sophomore Alex Lewis, the Class C 2014 Cross
Country state champion, shows natural talent and is particularly
fun to watch. |
