New Orleans twice, Alabama and Oklahoma survive Monday at the Deep South Bayou Duals
December 29th, 2014 | Written by: Editor

Brother Martin, Holy Cross, Altus, OK, and Thompson, AL, survived the pools and two championship bracket matches to reach Tuesday's semifinals at the Deep South Bayou duals on Monday at the River Center in Baton Rouge.

Brother Martin defeated Fort Walton Beach (57-6), Lafayette (61-12), Brusly (49-15), Comeaux (60-12) and Duncan, OK (59-6) to advance to the semifinals against Altus, OK.

Altus, sporting pink singlets (which they wear quite well, thank you very much) defeated Sam Houston (77-3), Niceville, FL (63-6), Live Oak (63-7), Teurlings Catholic (66-9) and Jesuit (47-19) to earn the right to face the Crusaders for a trip to the finals.  If that last score sounds familiar, Brother Martin defeated Jesuit 43-17 in a dual meet on December 13th.  This should be an excellent match.

On the other side of the bracket Holy Cross will meet the defending Alabama 6A state champion team from Thompson, Alabama.

Holy Cross reached the semifinals by defeating South Walton, FL (63-16), Baton Rouge (57-20), Teurlings Catholic (50-19), Live Oak (58-19) and Liverpool, NY (43-15).

Thompson advanced with wins over Phoenix-B, NY (83-0), Hahnville (68-12), Comeaux (69-6), Brusly (55-16) and Catholic (51-24).

Wrestling will begin at approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday.  The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.

Individual matches of note

Several very good individual matches were had on Monday:

First and foremost in most peoples' minds was the 132 lbs. match-up between Brother Martin's Paul Klein and Brusly's Kendon Kayser.  Klein won a hard fought 7-5 win in which Kayser earned his three escape and two takedown points (photos below).  This match should place Klein and Kayser as the #1 and #2 seeds at the Louisiana Classic on January 16th and 17th.

Kayser solidified his second seed spot at the Classic with a 5-0 victory over Sulphur's Brennan Taylor (photos below).  Possibly a third seed, Taylor may have been relegated to #4 via a 7-2 earlier loss to Jesuit's Max Grosch.

Another seeding scenario was settled at 106 lbs. when Jesuit's Brody Martin took a 2-1 season lead over Rummel's Blake Mateau via a 6-2 win (photos below).

Other matches of interest, albeit certainly not all, are mentioned below:

1. 120 lbs. Rumney (BM) over Franklin (BRU) 8-6
2. 132 lbs. Clement (HC) over Ianno (PH) in 1:16
3. 132 lbs. Gunn (CAT) over Yanez (THM) 11-6
4. 145 lbs. Rando (HC) over Soto (SW) in 2:58
5. 195 lbs. Patron, Jr. (JES) over Hunter (ALT) in 0:39
