Miss Raven Guidry. a soon-to-be-junior at Acadiana High School, attained All-American status at the USAW Cadet Women's Freestyle Nationals with a 7th-place finish in the 14-women bracket, held on July 18th.  Guidry scored a fall over California's Trina Nguyen in 4:03 in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals.  In her quarterfinal match she lost to Angelina Gomez of Texas, who was the event's runner-up.  Miss Guidry won her first consolation match with a first period (1:42) fall before succumbing to California's 2nd-seeded Diona Freitas 13-2.  Miss Guidry's two wins and two losses enabled her to compete for 7th place against a familiar foe, Miss Nguyen of California, whom Guidry pinned in 4:03 in her first match.  This match was a tad harder as, after three rounds were over, the score was 13-13.  Miss Guidry was awarded the victory due to her scoring the last takedown of the match.     Bracket in PDF

Guidry's next competition will be the USW Junior Women's Freestyle on July 20th and 21st, where she will be joining Team Louisiana's other young women, Brittany Bates of Doyline and Abigail Nette of Destrehan.

The Cadet Men's Greco-Roman competition included Rummel's sophomore Blake Mateu, Jared Thieler of St. Paul's, Dalton Driggers of Parkway and Kendon Kayser of Brusly/Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Mateu won his first match, a 12-1 technical fall over Colorado's K.J. Kearns.  However he lost his next championship bracket match and then fell to Jake Dexter of Wisconsin, ending the tournament for him with a 1-2 record in the 57-wrestlers field.  St. Paul's Jared Thieler also posted a 1-2 record in a bracket with 83 competitors.

At 145 pounds, Dalton Driggers of Parkway had 68 entrants.  Driggers went 0-2, but the sophomore certainly gained a lot of experience by just competing. His first match was against Florida's Anthony Artalona who advanced to Monday's finals match.

Kayser is the sole survivor going into Monday's matches.  Her won his first two matches by an 11-0 technical fall and a pin in 4:16.  Kayser's next match was in the quarterfinals against Garrett Model of Wisconsin.  After three periods the score was 3-3, but Model survived the tie-breaking criteria to be named the winner.  In the consolation bracket Kayser scored a fall in 1:04 and outscored his next opponent 7-4.  Come Monday his first match will be against Nolan Kicmol of Wisconsin, who lost in the quarterfinals.  There were 74 wrestlers entered in the 138 pounds bracket.
