The Holy Cross Tigers were in fifth place at the conclusion of the first day of the 2015 Las Vegas Holiday Classic.

Seventy-six teams are participating in the two-day tournament in which Holy Cross is the sole Louisiana team.  The field also contains teams from Arizona, California, the District of Columbia, New York, Utah, Washington and, naturally, Nevada.

The Tigers have previously fared very well in the event.  They placed third in 2014 (behind winner George Benoit, runners-up Colin Guerra and Brice Duhe, and third-place finisher Jake Rando).  In 2013 the Tigers took the runner-up spot.

Three Tigers will be competing in Saturday's quarterfinals.  Freshman Michael Lundin (106 lbs.) was 3-0 on Friday and will face Daniel Galvan of Rowland, California.  Lundin defeated the #7 seed in his first match with a fall in 5:49.  He pinned his next two opponents in 3:25 and 5:56.

2015 Division I state champion Jake Rando is the top seed at 145 lbs. and, after a first round bye, won his next two matches with falls in 3:02 and 4:29.  Rando, a junior, will face Reuben Elizalde of Brawley Union, CA in the quarterfinals.

At 152 lbs. junior Joey Foret, seeded fourth, is 3-0 and will meet Brawley Union's Gibby Carrillo next.  Foret advanced to the quarterfinals with falls in 2:46, 0:55 and 2:55.

Still alive in the consolation brackets are Jacob Spahn (4-1 at 113 lbs.), Beau Bush (3-1 at 126 lbs.), Michael Benton (3-1 at 160 lbs.) and Randy Amos (3-1 at 285 lbs.).
