Weight Class Champions Final Team Score 3rd-place and Finals Matches

Baton Rouge Catholic earned back the home-court advantage for the Greater Baton Rouge Championships last year at Brusly High School.  Last weekend they showed that they were not inclined to let it go anywhere else any time soon.  The Bears won their 27th city championship on Friday and Saturday and will host of the 2017 event.  Cameron Carpenter (120 lbs.), Davis Polito (138 lbs.), Jacob Fereday (160 lbs.) and K.J. Wilson (285 lbs.) won titles for the Bears, who scored 263 points, besting runner-up St. Amant by 25. (Bottom right: Tyler Werner, Andrew Messina, Davis Polito and Cameron Carpenter with the team championships plaque.)

Twelve of the 14 Catholic wrestlers entered earned placement points.  Daniel Gunn (126 lbs.), Brent Torres (145 lbs.), Andrew Messina (152 lbs.) and Nick Danna (195 lbs.) placed second for the Bears.  Placing third were Lance Blanchard (132 lbs.), Denver Denison (170 lbs.) and James DeLee (220 lbs.).  Evan Goldsmith (106 lbs.) placed .5th

For the second consecutive year St. Amant finished as the team runner-up, scoring 228 points.  However, this year they were not left bereft of individual champions.  Seniors Clint Brownell (152 lbs.) and Jordan Averette (182 lbs.), and junior Sage Nugent (170 lbs.) took home GBRC first-place honors.  Senior Brier Babin placed second for the Gators at 120 lbs., while Seth Wyble (113 lbs.), Nakie Brown (145 lbs.), Cameron Hyde (145 lbs.) and Kaelin Lambert (160 lbs.) placed third.  Tyree Morris (106 lbs.) and Murphy Savoy (285 lbs.) scored fourth-place points.  (Photo left)

For the second time in three weeks Sage Nugent was voted the Outstanding Wrestler in the heavier weight classes.  Nugent won his first match via a fall in 1:12, got past a tough Denver Denison of Catholic 15-9 and then avenged an earlier loss to Brusly defending Division III state champion Richard Hunter 11-9 in the finals.  (Photo right)

Live Oak, just as they did in 2016, placed third after accumulating 172 points.  McKinley, Brusly and Dutchtown placed 4th, 5th and 6th, respectively.

Other title winners were Central's Austin Gouedy (106 lbs. - his second GBRC title), Live Oak's Ean Hill (126 lbs.) and Brennan Webb (145 lbs.), Brusly's Austin Franklin (132 lbs.), Kennan Tate of Zachary (195 lbs.) and Mason Rabel of Dunham (220 lbs.).

The McKinley Panthers were fourth, barely, beating out Brusly by one-half point, and posting their best team finish since placing 3rd in 2000.  McKinley had a champion in senior Ruben Lorenzo at 113 lbs., a runner-up at 106 lbs. in Jeremiah Johnson, and a third-place finish by Isaiah Johnson (126 lbs.).  (Photo left)

Lorenzo, who was the #1 seed at 113 lbs. scored falls in 1:47 and 2:43 to reach the finals match.  There he defeated Brusly's Hunter Richey 11-4.

Competing in his third year, this was Lorenzo's 12th career tournament and his first championship.  Adding to that achievement, Lorenzo was also voted the Outstanding Wrestler in the lighter weight classes.  (Photos right)
