De la Salle are primed for team championships |
January 13th, 2016| Written by: Editor |
Upon entering the finals on Saturday evening it appears that Brother Martin
will win their fifth consecutive Division I team title. In Division II
Teurlings Catholic is in great shape to win their third consecutive Division II
team championship. De la Salle looks to be the team champion in
Division III.
Division I
The Crusaders have seven finalists and a 37.5 point lead over second-place
Jesuit, who has five finalists. Holy Cross has a lock on at least the
third spot as the Tigers have a 23 point lead over fourth-place Comeaux, who
rather unexpectedly should be the top public school finisher. St. Paul's
is currently in fifth place by seven points, and could surpass the Spartans as
the Wolves have two finalists and the Spartans are done scoring., though, has a
chance to surpass Comeaux, however, as they are only seven points behind the
Spartans.
Several big upsets were had in Saturday's semifinals:
- Top-seeded and undefeated Rodrigo Diaz of Lafayette allowed a
last-second takedown by #4 Darian Mitchell of Barbe, giving Mitchell his
first win over Diaz in four attempts, 6-5;
- Brandon Greer of Jesuit continued his run at 182 lbs. with an 11-5 win
over #4 Payton Wicker of Zachary;
- Also at 182 lbs., sixth seed Matthew Putnam of Holy Cross defeated #2
Travis Viener of Brother Martin 8-3;
- At 106 lbs. unseeded Kobe Bernard of Dutchtown knocked off #2 Kiefer
Fuselier of Sulphur 7-5;
- Brother Martin's Paul-Stephen Schmidt, at 113 lbs., defeated top-seeded
Adam Larriviere of Jesuit 8-4;
- Every other weight class aside from 106, 113, 182 and 220 consist
matches between the top two seeds.

Division II
Teurlings Catholic brings a 17.5-point lead over Live Oak into the finals,
and the Rebels have four finalists to the Eagles' three. The battle for
third place should be interesting as Rummel holds a slim four-point lead over
Shaw, and both teams have five finalists. No finals matches pit Raiders
against Eagles, though.
