Division I - 152 pounds: Foret takes the tie-breaker with Brownell
March 25th, 2016 | Written by: Editor

Joey Foret of Holy Cross won the last of three matches with St. Amant senior Clint Brownell 6-2 to take the 152 lbs. Division I championship.  Brownell won their first match in the Spartan Invitational finals 9-6, and Foret evened things up with a 6-5 Louisiana Classic finals win.  Brownell opened the state finals with a takedown for a 2-0 lead, but near the end of the first period gave up an escape and a takedown to Foret, who would not allow Brownell to score again.

Synopsis

This was a two-wrestler weight class in Division I all season, albeit they only met twice before the state finals.  Brownell got the best of Foret in the Spartan Invitational finals, and Foret returned the favor in the Louisiana Classic finals.  Both fared very well in their other events.  Foret won the Raider Invitational, placed second at the South Walton Border Wars, won the Las Vegas Holiday Classic and the Ken Cole.  Brownell Won the Warrior Open, the Wildcat Open and the Greater Baton Rouge Championships.  Brownell's only loss aside from in the Louisiana Classic finals was to an out-of-state wrestler at the Deep South Bayou Duals.  Foret also lost to an out-of-state opponent at the DSBD, and also in the finals of the SW Border Wars.  Foret did, however have one other blemish on his record, a 3-1 loss to Shaw's Brad Albarado, he had beaten the Eagle wrestler twice before that, and did so again twice afterward.

The race for third place was a tournament of its own.  Griffin Mason of Jesuit and Kevin Casey of Brother Martin were the favorites and were seeded third and fourth accordingly.  The two were 1-1 on the season, but Casey's win was at a dual meet while Mason's was at the Louisiana Classic, in which he placed third.  However, fifth-seeded Thaquan Priestley of Lafayette, who had lost to both Griffin and Casey in the Louisiana Classic, decided to skip two extra consolation round matches with a win over Casey in the semifinals.  That forced the tie-breaker between Mason and Casey in the consolation semifinals, and it was Mason who prevailed 3-1.  Priestley got through his consolation finals match with a 15-5 major decision over sixth-seeded Andrew Messina of Catholic, leading to a second match against Mason. Mason won their first match 7-4, and this one was similar as Mason took third with a 6-2 victory.
