Division II - 145 pounds: Finally!  Aucoin gets his state championship
March 25th, 2016 | Written by: Editor

Seeded first as a freshman in the 2013 state championships at 106 lbs., Andrew Aucoin of Sam Houston ran into a nightmarish third period against Live Oak's Jacob Chenevert, in which the Eagle won the first first of two titles.  In 2014 as a sophomore Aucoin was the second seed to another Live Oak wrestler, senior Cody Hill, who went on to win his third title.  As a junior Aucoin met fellow junior Brock Bonin of Teurlings Catholic who, like Hill the year before, already had two state titles to his credit (he would end up with four).  As a senior Aucoin met yet another Live Oak wrestler in Brennan Webb, and one who had defeated Aucoin in the first of their two matches prior to the state tournament.  Aucoin did not let the title elude him this time, though, posting a 9-2 lead before scoring a fall in 5:54 and becoming the second Sam Houston wrestler to win a state championship.

Synopsis

Aucoin started the season at 152 lbs. but, after a third-place finish in the Central Wildcat and an injury in the Spartan Invitational, competed at 145 lbs. for all but two of his remaining matches.  In the Lone Survivor, an important Division II testing ground, Aucoin lost 10-4 to Live Oak's Brennan Webb in the finals.  Aucoin, however, reversed that outcome a week later at the Louisiana Classic by defeating Webb 7-1 in the consolation semifinals before defeating Comeaux sophomore Evan Richards to take third place.  At the Ken Cole Aucoin beat Richards again, and this time made it to the finals where he fell to Holy Cross' Jake Rando (Rando also defeated Aucoin in the Louisiana Classic semifinals).  At the state championships Aucoin advanced to the finals via two major decisions and a fall.

Webb, a senior at Live Oak, also had a very successful season.  After a third place finish at the Warrior Open he won the Brusly 8 over Division II rival Dylan Hezeau of Rummel, and then placed second to Rando in the Spartan Invitational.  Webb won the Zachary Big Horse and went 4-1 in the Deep South Bayou Duals, losing to an Altus, Oklahoma, competitor but defeated Division I's William Rosevalley of Jesuit and Dustin Doucet of Sulphur.  He then won the Lone Survivor (10-4 over Aucoin), placed sixth at the Louisiana Classic and concluded his season (aside from the state tournament) with a win over Catholic's Brent Torres to win the Greater Baton Rouge Championships.

Of those who did not make the finals North Desoto's Cody Hickman fared much better than one might have expected from an eighth seed.  After losing to Aucoin in the quarterfinals, Hickman, a junior, pinned #4 Hezeau in 3:42, #6 Jacob LaFleur of Teurlings Catholic in 4:31 and, to place third, pinned #3 Perry Hawxhurst of Grace King in 4:54.
