Shaw's Cameron Bertot made the most of his second and final trip to the
Division II state championship finals, defeating Rayne's Devonte Robinson for
Shaw's first title of the evening.
Synopsis
Shaw senior Cameron Bertot may have only won one tournament during the course
of the season, but it was one he fell just short of in 2015 - the Division II
state championship. Bertot capped off a season in which he won 31 matches,
including victories over Division I opponents Nicholas Danna of Catholic, Ian
Crawford of Lafayette, Luther Jones of Dutchtown, Chase Menendez of Destrehan,
and Blake Huff and Kyle Schech of St. Paul's. His only loss to a Division
II opponent at 182 lbs. was to Rummel's Josh Ramirez, who beat everyone he faced
over the season. Bertot was the runner-up at the Raider Invitational and
the Spartan Invitational, and placed sixth at the Louisiana Classic.
Bertot's finals opponent was Rayne senior Devonte Robinson. Robinson
won the Lone Survivor at Parkway and the Lafayette Metro tournament, placed
second at the Rayne Invitational and third at the Jefferson Invitational.
Unlike their Division I counterparts, the Division II competitors fared
almost exactly as they were seeded, with the only exception being when the
seventh seed, sophomore Billy Wood of Carencro, who knocked out #6 Michael Mason of
Belle Chasse in the fourth round of the consolation matches. Clay finished
sixth after succumbing to a fall to senior Lee Schwarzenbach of Teurlings
Catholic. Live Oak's Mason Castle took third-place honors with a fall over
fourth-seeded J.R. Davlin of North Desoto.
