Division III - 120 pounds: Christ finishes extraordinary season with the first of three Basile championships
March 25th, 2016 | Written by: Editor

Freshman Gavin Christ capped off a 24-1 season with a state championship by pinning defending Division III champion John Rollins of Episcopal in 2:46.

Synopsis

One could not ask for a better freshman year than Basile's Gavin Christ had.  He won the Central Wildcat Open, the Jacob McMillan Memorial, the Lafayette Metro championship and placed second in the Ken Cole, in which his good friend, Comeaux's Seth Oubre, defeated him 11-7 in the finals for his only loss of the year.  Along the way he defeated a 2015 Division III state champion twice, a 2016 Division II runner-up three times and a 2016 Division II state champion twice.  He won his first Division III title by recording three falls and a technical fall, an effort that earned Christ the Division III Outstanding Wrestler award.  If he stays healthy, expect a lot of this young man next season.

Defending state champion John Rollins of Episcopal won only the Brusly Invitational this season, but faced some stern competition in his losses, including Division I wrestlers Joseph Dupre and Adam Larriviere of Jesuit, Brier Babin of St. Amant, Cameron Carpenter of Catholic and Troy Detweiler of Dutchtown.  Actually, aside from Christ Rollins only wrestled five Division III wrestlers.  He was 6-1 against Division II opponents and was 13-6 against Division I opponents, including wins over the 2016 third-placer Dylan Ames of Comeaux and John Oliver of Brother Martin.  Rollins was 3-2 against Dutchtown's Troy Detweiler, who placed sixth in Division I.

Michael Gordy of Ouachita Christian placed third via a 4-0 decision over sixth-seeded Brusly freshman Ethan Cascio, who made the consolation finals with a pin over fourth-seeded Chris LeBouef of South Plaquemines.

The top six placers in this weight class consisted of three sophomores and three freshmen, all of which can look forward to even better season to come.
