Division III - 220 pounds: Elder Rabel matches younger brother with title of his own
March 25th, 2016 | Written by: Editor

Rabel family bragging rights should be at a standstill until next year.  Last year, as an eighth-grader, Grant Rabel won a state championship while his older brother Mason was a runner-up.  This year the tables were turned.  Grant fell one point short in the 182 lbs. finals, but Mason kept the Dunham High School name among those with Division III titles with a 9-7 victory over Xavier Mitchell of John Curtis.  Both Rabels will have a shot to become two-time state champions next year.  Even better for Grant, though, as he will have two more years after that.

Synopsis

Mason Rabel was seeded first in this event for good reason.  He won the Brusly Invitational and the Greater Baton Rouge Championships.  He placed second in the Ken Cole, third in the Zachary Big Horse and fourth in the Louisiana Classic.  He only lost to the wrestlers who placed first, second and third in Division I, and the scores in two of those matches were 5-3 and 3-2 TB-1.  And he already had a win, albeit only a 10-6 one, over John Curtis' second-seeded Xavier Mitchell.

Mitchell only had three losses as well, although one was to Rabel in the Brusly Invitational finals.  He won the John Curtis Invitational and the Greater New Orleans Division III District Tournament.  His only other losses came to Hahnville's Stephen Cloud (4th in Division I) and Rummel's Robert Hudgins (1st in Division II).

Sixth-seeded St. Louis junior Wyatt Mallett had the best tournament aside from the finalists.  After a 14-12 quarterfinals win over third seed Eric Hamrick of De la Salle, Mallet lost to Mitchell but then defeated fifth-seeded Noah Willis of Lakeside in 2:54, and then beat Hamrick again in 1:43 to place third.
