Division III - 285 pounds: Hurricanes' Wilson overcomes late two-point deficit with third period fall
March 25th, 2016 | Written by: Editor

With time running out and trailing by two points to second-seeded Jeremiah James, South Plaquemines' Jonathan Wilson took the Cavalier down to his back and scored a fall in 5:45 to win a second title for the Hurricanes.

Synopsis

South Plaquemines senior Jonathan Wilson had beaten every Division III opponent in his way.  He also avenged earlier losses to Lafayette's Dominique Williams (3rd in Division I) and Hahnville's Blade Rager (4th in Division I).  Mat Blair of Division II Shaw was the only opponent to whom Wilson lost, which came in the Spartan Invitational finals   He had defeated second seeded Jeremiah James in 2:17 in the Brusly Invitational finals.  He defeated #3 Joseph Presley of Evangel in the same event in 0:26 seconds, and he had pinned Jordan Scott of Thomas Jefferson and Eric Bumgarden of John Curtis.  After 15 straight wins prior to the state championships, Wilson looked to be a lock to take a state title.

In the finals of the Greater New Orleans Division III championships Wilson faced James again.  This time, however, the Cavalier pushed Wilson to a 2-2 tie after six minutes, and Wilson won via a Sudden Victory round takedown.  All of a sudden the state tournament did not look so easy for Wilson.  It did not look easy for James, either, though, as Evangel's Joseph Presley, seeded third, had only the loss to Wilson and an earlier one to Lakeside's fourth-seeded D.J. Harvey, which Presley avenged twice in the later days of the season.  Suffice to say, Wilson's road to the finals would be easier than James' or Presley's, who were predicted to meet in the semifinals on the south end of the bracket.

James had seven wins (all by falls) against just four losses against Wilson (twice), Jesuit's Corey Dublin, Shaw's Matthew Blair and Lafayette's Dominique Williams.

Presley placed third with a 7-4 win over fourth-seeded D.J. Harvey of Lakeside.
