Louisiana to be well represented at Brute Nationals |

At least 37 Louisiana wrestlers, including two first-graders, as well as two Division III state champions and several others who placed well in Divisions I, II and III at last February's state wrestling tournament, will descend on Independence, Missouri, this weekend to compete in the Brute Nationals Folkstyle Championships. Among the coaches who should be there are Phil Bode, Glenn Bernard, Michael Marson, Matt Credeur and several others.
Competitors in grades 9-12 will start wrestling on Friday, April 8th, at 8 a.m. Wrestling will continue until 5 p.m. to determine matched pairs for All-American status. The finals matches to determine 1st through 8th placers are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
Competitors in grades 1-8 will start wrestling on Saturday, April 9th, at 8 a..m. Wrestling will continue until 5 p.m. to determine matched pairs for All-American status. The finals matches to determine 1st through 8th placers are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Last year Rodrigo Diaz of Lafayette earned his second Brute Nationals title. His Lions teammate, Thaquan Priestly, who will participate this year, placed fifth while Airline's Javarious Jones placed second. In the Girls High School Division Doyline's Brittany Bates won her weight class, as did C.E. Byrd's Mackinzie Phillips.

Even for those who do not win a match the experience will be invaluable. Hence if someone's record is listed as "0-2," there is no reason for that wrestler not to be proud that he or she was there. "0-2" beats "0-0" all day long.
