Blue Jays' Senior
Night ceremonies followed by shutout of Shaw |

Thursday, January 25th, was Senior Night for
eight Jesuit Blue Jay wrestlers, marking their last home wrestling
event. Senior Night,
however, also honors the mothers and fathers who supported their sons
throughout their wrestling careers.
For being the parent of a wrestler is not an easy thing
to do. Once they have graduated from
"Oh dear, don't let my baby get hurt" to "Kill 'em!" parents start to learn the
nuances that make wrestling a sport apart from others.
Their sons skipping meals becomes routine, as does his running at odd
hours of the night. They inure
themselves to the fact that limps and grunts do not require a doctor's visit,
but are a part of a wrestler's SOP.
During the season, they understand that their child is not suffering from
consumption, but is finely tuning his body for the hardest sport available in
high school. When their child wins,
their cheers are hearty and boisterous, with an occasional "Phew!" that their
child survived a match relatively unscathed.
They also learn when their child wants a little sympathy, and will
provide as much as is needed.
Watching a child voluntarily go through the rigors of practices and matches
without complaints, and tempering their protective instincts through it all, is
no easy task.
Wrestlers should appreciate that while they are learning
the limits to which they can push themselves, it takes work for a parent to
understand and then appreciate why their children are engaging themselves in
such a rigorous activity. In a short
time, wrestling parents learn that the dedication and discipline exhibited by
their children will benefit them in other endeavors later in their lives.
But to see the effects a practice can have on a child, to watch a child
compete in such a physically demanding sport, and to do so with understanding
rather than panic, takes courage that should not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
As six of the seniors had a match to worry about shortly
after the ceremony, the white rose for their mothers was a good start.
