Jared Thieler, the second of St. Paul's three champions, defeated St. Amant's Brier Babin 9-3. |
Junior Jared Thieler of St. Paul's placed fourth in 2016, but this season a 28-1 record earned him the top spot in the 2017 seeding. While he only placed 5th in the South Walton Border Wars, he won the Trey Culotta over Comeaux sophomore Dyllon Bernard and then won the Ketelsen Memorial over Brother Martin Lane Boudreaux. His only blemish was a 4-3 loss to Cole Clement of Holy Cross at 132 lbs. Thieler defeated Matt Williams and Ben Wisniewski of Brother Martin (twice), Dyllon Bernard of Comeaux and Jordan Giewat and Jackson DeGruy of Jesuit prior to the state championships.
Senior Briar Babin of St. Amant was 38-8 in the regular season. He had wins over Gavin Christ of Basile, Trent Mahoney of East Ascension, Mason Middleton of Live Oak and Alex Duncan of Brother Martin. Babin's losses came from Gavin Christ (D III champion x 2), Steven Shields (D I state champion x 4) and Lane Boudreaux (3rd in D I), Cole Houser of St. Paul's (D1 and four against Live Oak's Mason Middleton.(D II runner-up). Babin won the Central Wildcat, placed second at the Zachary Big Horse, the Ken Cole and the Greater Baton Rouge championships, third at the Spartan Invitational and fifth in the Louisiana Classic. Due to the loss to Boudreaux, Babin was seeded third.
AT the state championships Thieler defeated Holy Cross' Macon Macaluso in 3:08 in the second round, and the pinned #8 Seth DeRoche of Lafayette in 0:16. In the semifinals he scored a 13-3 Major Decision over Jesuit's #5 Jordan Giewat. Babin pinned Fontainebleau's William Broussard in 1:13, scored a 13-2 Major Decision in the quarterfinals against #6 Van Dykes of Catholic and then defeated the second-seeded Lane Boudreaux of Brother Martin 6-0 to reach the finals against Thieler.
