Second-seeded sophomore Perry Ganci of Jesuit defeated Barbe's top-seeded Darion Mitchell 2-1.  It was the second runner-up finish for the Barbe senior, who made the 2016 finals with a last-second semifinal win over then undefeated Rodrigo Diaz.

Barbe senior Darion Mitchell was having the type of season Lafayette's Rodrigo Diaz had last season.  Aside from a 4-2 Sudden Victory loss at 285 lbs. to Lafayette's David Hudson, giving Mitchell a 4-1 start to the season.  Dropping to 220 lbs., Mitchell looked unbeatable.  Before the loss to Hudson, Mitchell had already won the Ronnie Suarez District 5A tournament.  After the loss he won his next 15 matches which included championships at the Lone Survivor, the Louisiana Classic and the Ken Cole.

Two of Mitchell's wins were against Jesuit sophomore Perry Ganci, and they were feasibly the toughest of the season for Mitchell.  He pinned Ganci in 5:26 in the Louisiana Classic semifinals, and then beat the Blue Jay 3-1 in a Sudden Victory round in the quarterfinals of the Ken Cole.  Mitchell reached the state finals for the second consecutive year (he lost to Brother Martin's Jacob Clapp in 2016) via falls in 1:39, 3:02 and 2:24.

Ganci, seeded second, posted a 31-3 record before the state championships.  Two of those losses were to Mitchell.  The other was to Brother Martin's Mack Brown (10-7) in the consolation finals of the Louisiana Classic.  During the season Ganci placed fifth at the South Walton Border Wars, seventh at the Kansas City Stampede, fourth at the Louisiana Classic and third at the Ken Cole.  He also defeated Brown twice: once in the Jesuit vs. Brother Martin dual meet and again in the Louisiana Classic quarterfinals.

In the state tournament Ganci won two early matches by falls in 2:23 and 0:54, and in the finals beat Brown again via a fall in 1:54.  After the earlier close losses to Mitchell, this time Ganci came out on top in a 2-1 decision.
