Cooper Simon won Rayne's first state championship since Billy Marcantel in 2013 with a fall in 1:46 over Live Oaks' Jordan Chenevert. |
Rayne's Cooper Simon dominated all but one of his opponents, no matter their Division. His only blemish in his 36-1 record was a one-point (4-3) loss to Brother Martin's Daniel Croy in the finals of the Louisiana Classic. Near the end of the match it appeared that the Crusader was locking hands on Simon, which should have tied the match, but after the call was explained to the Rayne coaches, it did not take long for even the Rayne fans to accept that the move was legal. Aside from the runner-up spot at the LA Classic, Simon won the Central Wildcat, the Teurlings Catholic Rebel Open, the Jacob McMillan Memorial, the Trey Culotta, the Parkway Lone Survivor and the Ken Cole. His victims in his 36 wins include Brennan Langley of Basile (a Division III defending state champion), Jourdan Theall of North Vermillion (who defeated Langley in the finals this season and was named Division III Outstanding Wrestler), Brandon Stein of St. Paul's twice (Stein won third in Division I), Division I runner-up Jeremiah Johnson of McKinley and Peyton Bass of Airline.
Simon used a fall in 1:52 and a 16-0 Technical Fall in 4:00 to advance to the finals.
Simon's opponent in the finals was freshman Jordan Chenevert of Live Oak. Chenevert had a record of 18-7, placed second at the Central Wildcat Open and third at the Zachary Big Horse. He used three falls of 0:42, 3:21 and 3:06 to reach the finals.
Chenevert was outmatched in the finals, but should not feel bad about it. Nobody wanted to be in the Rayne junior's weight class. Against only Division II opponents, two matches went six minutes, and Simon won them 12-2 and 14-4 (both Major Decisions). Of his nine falls, only three were in the second period while the rest were in the first.
