For all practical purposes, Rummel's Blake Mateu was undefeated for the second consecutive year, even though he did technically go 29-1. The one loss was a test again Brother Martin's Steven Shields, a three-time (and soon to be four-time) Division I state champion. Mateu went up to 126 lbs. to meet Shields, and he did a good job against the Crusader, losing only 5-2. This season Mateu won the Rummel 8, the Teurlings Catholic Rebel Open, the Louisiana Classic and the Bruin Open. He finished second in the South Walton Border Wars.
Live Oak freshman Camdyn Ingram had the type of season, and finals match with Mateu, which promises his becoming one of the top wrestlers in the state. Ingram was 48-4 with his losses coming from Mateu (twice), Brother Martin's Luke Cotton and St. Amant's Brier Babin. Ingram won the Brusly 8, placed second at the Spartan Invitational, won the Jefferson Invitational and the Greater Baton Rouge Championships and placed third at the Louisiana Classic.
Mateu's two wins during the season over Ingram were Major Decisions of 14-2 and 12-3. The Division II final was a different story, as Mateu only beat Ingram 6-3. Quite possibly Mateu could go undefeated against Louisiana wrestlers for the third consecutive year (save this season's Shields match). The three-point loss in the finals should be enough to inspire Ingram to better results, as well.
