Parkway sophomore Trey Fontenot, seeded fourth, upset the #1 seed in an Ultimate Tie-breaker and then scored a 12-4 Major Decision over second-seeded Mason Middleton of Live Oak to with the Division II title.

Top-seeded sophomore Morgan Manuel of Rayne brought a 37-8 record to the state championships, which included a 5-3 win by Manuel in the finals of the Parkway Lone Survivor tournament. In the Louisiana Classic, Manuel defeated second-seeded senior Mason Middleton of Live Oak.  Middleton, who entered the tournament with a 43-7 record, defeated Rummel's Jack Graham in a dual meet.  Graham was 9-1 and had only a runner-up finish at the South Walton Border Wars to his credit, yet was seeded third over Parkway's Fontenot.  Graham's record indicates he may have been plagued with a recurring injury, but does not explain his seeding higher than Fontenot.

The odds are that Fontenot is not losing any sleep over it.

Manuel accepted a forfeit and then pinned his quarterfinals opponent in 1:49.  Rummel's Graham, only a freshman, pinned his first opponent in 1:50, but then lost to Teurlings Catholic's Brett Schneider, who for some reason was seeded sixth, in 4:59.   In the second semifinals, Middleton made short work of the Rebel junior, pinning him in 1:33.

The first semifinals, between #1 Manuel and #4 Fontenot was brutal.  Tied after regulation, the match went into an Ultimate Tie-breaker period in which Fontenot came out ahead 8-6.

Fontenot was 37-8 and won the Evangel Holiday Classic, the Northwest Louisiana Regionals, place second (to Manuel) at the Lone Survivor and placed third at the Riot on the Red and the Zachary Big Horse tournaments.

Middleton's four losses included two to Division I finalist Brier Babin of St. Amant (Middleton won the season series between the two seniors 4-2), one to De LaSalle's runner-up Jeffrey Hefner, two to Brother Martin's Alex Duncan and one to Brother Martin's Steven Shields.  He placed first at the Central Wildcat Open and the Greater Baton Rouge City Championships, second at the Jefferson Invitational and the Spartan Invitational, and sixth at the Louisiana Classic.
