Top-seeded junior Trevor Tamburo of Parkway won the Panthers' second individual championship with an 8-7 victory over Central's #2 seed Trey Fontenot. |
Parkway junior Trevor Tamburo was seeded and placed third in 2016, behind Rummel's Blake Mateu and Rayne's Morgan Manuel. This year, with a record of 29-4, Tamburo was the #1 seed. Tamburo placed third at the Riot on the Red and the Zachary Big Horse, second at the Eagle Open and the Lone Survivor, and won the Northwest Louisiana Regionals and the Franklin Halloran Ranger Classic in Texas. Of his four losses, two were to Airline's Josh Partin, one to Airline's Tucker Almond (which he avenged later) and one to Dutchtown's Joshua Wright. Tamburo reached the finals via a bye, a fall in 1:50, and decisions of 10-3 and 9-3.
Second-seeded Central senior Tyler Fontenot had a much harder road to meet Tamburo in the finals. After a bye and fall in 3:55, he faced a tough Mauricio Ballesteros of Grace King, whom he pinned in 3:24. In the semifinals he had the pleasure of meeting defending state champion Ian Hill of Live Oak. Fontenot had a 3-2 season edge over Hill. Hill pinned Fontenot in two dual meets and Fontenot won his matches 10-8 in Sudden Victory, a 13-2 Major Decision and a 6-5 consolation finals in the Greater Baton Rouge Championships. Fontenot got by Hill 4-0 to reach the finals against Tamburo.
