Rummel's #4 Dawson Mire
and Belle Chasse's #3 Hayden Hess did not allow the top-two seeds to
advance to the finals. In that match, Mire became Rummel's second
state champion with a 9-2 win, avenging an earlier loss to the Cardinal. |
This weight class was the first in Division II that did not feature a #1 or a #2
seed make the finals. In the top of the bracket fourth-seeded Rummel
junior Dawson Mire upset the top-seeded Matthew Pitts of Parkway 8-3.
The bottom half of the bracket can justifiably be described as chaotic.
After a first-round forfeit, North Desoto's John Michael Cristler, a junior,
pinned second-seeded senior Matthew Boudreau of Central with a fall in 0:48.
Cristler was then pinned in 2:54 by Teurlings Catholic's senior Josh Hebert in
the quarterfinals. Things finally approached relative normalcy the Belle
Chasse junior Hayden Hess, the third seed, defeated Hebert via an 11-2 Major
Decision.
Hess, with a pre-state record of 36-12, won the Zachary Big Horse over
Dutchtown's Joshua Wright and placed third at the Trygg Memorial and the Spartan
Invitational. He placed fourth at the Central Wildcat and the Trey
Culotta. Among his losses were some stiff competition including Division I
state champion Shane Ulfers of St. Paul's, Josh Partin of Airline, Patrick Evans
of Brother Martin and Adam Larriviere of Jesuit.
Mire did not start competing until January 7th and only sported a record of
11-1. That loss, on January 21st, was to Hess via a 9-6 decision.
