Byron Zeno completed an undefeated season after defeating #3 Billy Clay
of Carencro in 2:24. |
Northside senior Byron Zeno entered the tournament as the top seed with a record
of 24-0. He won the Jacob McMillan over Comeaux's Hayden Parker 8-5, was
undefeated at the Acadia Duels, won the Rayne Invitational over Tyler Broussard
of Kaplan, the Ken Cole over Owen Mabile of Brusly 3-1 and the Lafayette Metro
Tournament over Carencro's Billy Clay via a forfeit. His closest Division II
match was a 12-10 win over Carencro's Billy Clay on December 23rd. Before
the state championships Zeno defeated Clay in 5:24 and accepted a forfeit over
Clay at the Lafayette Metro tournament. Zeno had little experience with
wrestlers outside the Lafayette area, and the ones from New Orleans and Baton
Rouge basically came to him in the Rayne Invitational and Ken Cole Memorial.
Belle Chasse's Zachary Edwards was seeded second and had a record of 31-12.
Edwards defeated Clay 15-8 in the Louisiana Classic and thus was seeded second
to Clay's third. It did not matter, though, as Clay defeated Edwards via a 13-3
Major Decision in the semifinals.
