In a very close 3-2 match, #1 Tyler Carriere of Rayne won the state championship over Haughton's second-seeded Daniel J. Monroe.

Tyler Carriere became Rayne's second Division II state champion of the evening after a close 3-2 finals win over Haughton's Daniel J (DJ) Monroe.  In Carriere's 2016-17 repertoire on the mats, which led to a 36-4 record before the state championships, Carriere defeated Monroe 3:45 in the semifinals of the Lone Survivor Tournament.  He won the Jefferson Invitational, the Jacob McMillan Memorial, the Lone Survivor (over Airline's Matt Salinas, who had defeated Carrier in the Trey Culotta), placed fourth in the Louisiana Classic and third in the Ken Cole Memorial.

Haughton junior Daniel J. Monroe's record prior to the state tournament was 24-6.  He won the Evangel Holiday Classic, placed second at the Riot on the Red (falling to Airline's Matt Salinas), and fifth at the Ken Cole.  Aside from the Ken Cole Memorial, Monroe had little experience with wrestlers from more southern areas of Louisiana.

Carriere pinned his first three opponents in 1:06, 0:43 and 1:38 to made the finals.  For the right to face Carriere Monroe used falls in 2:15, 0:27 and 1:42.  With pins that quick a 3-2 finals match score was unexpected.
