St. Louis Catholic freshman Alex Yokubaitis, seeded second, defeated Brusly's top-seeded David Kent via an 11-2 Major Decision.

Brusly's David Kent, a junior, established himself on the varsity mats in 2016 when he lost an 8-6 match to Basile's Brennan Langley in the Division III finals.  This season Kent competed at 120 and 113 lbs., only dropping to 106 lbs. for the state championships.  At the higher weights, he won 19 matches and lost 10.  The 10 losses, however, came from stellar competition, as all but one placed at the 2017 state championships.  Three were Division I placers, four were Division II placers, and the other two were from a defending Division III state champion and an as yet uncrowned Division III state champion and Outstanding Wrestler.

Kent placed 2nd in the Brusly 8 and the Brusly Invitational, and 3rd in the Greater Baton Rouge Championships.  He won matches against Catholic's Luke Romano, Clayton Hill and Jordan Chenevert of Live Oak and Cameron Witherwax of St. Louis.  With his success at the 2016 state championships, and the quality of his 2016-17 opponents, Kent earned his #1 seeding.

St. Louis freshman Alexander Yokubaitis was unknown to most people at the start of the season, but only briefly.  Wrestling only at 106 lbs., Yokubaitis won the Warrior Open via a 6-1 win over Romano.  A week later he beat Corey Brownell of St. Amant 7-1.  His first of only three losses came against Montalbano in the finals of the Rebel Open.  After that he won the Eagle Open over Airline's Dakota Brace 13-7 before losing his second match to Colton Sonnier of Teurlings Catholic in a 9-8 decision.  After winning the Brusly Invitational and the St. Louis Invitational, Yokubaitis made the finals of the Ken Cole, losing again to Sonnier by only one point, 3-2.

As one of only two wrestlers with a shot at winning four consecutive state championships (Gavin Christ of Basile is halfway there), Yokubaitis will not be overlooked in the upcoming season by anyone in any division.
