Top-seeded Robert Christman of St. Louis Catholic pinned second-seeded Adam Gaspard of Kaplan in 3:44. |
St. Louis junior Robert Christman was the best by far in this weight class. Christman was 34-5 entering the state championships, with tournament wins including the Central Wildcat, the Brusly Invitational, the St. Louis Invitational and the McMillan Memorial. During the season, he defeated Division I wrestlers Joshua Wright (Dutchtown), Jeremy Flieg (Catholic) and Josh Partin (Airline). He defeated Dylan Hezeau of Rummel, who placed third in Division II, and defeated George Femmer of Teurlings Catholic, who won a state championship at 152. lbs. Of his five losses, two were the Matthew Matherne of Ouachita Christian, one was to Sam Houston's Aaron John (those two were 1-1 against each other) and two more were to Jesuit's Adam Larriviere at the Ken Cole. In his weight class at the state championships he had already defeated the second seed, Adam Gaspard of Kaplan, by an 11-1 Major Decision and a fall in 0:44. Against the third-seeded freshman from Basile, Isaac Cortez, Christman won via a technical fall.
The senior Gaspard, who was a state champion at 126 lbs. in 2016, but started the season late, only bringing a 15-5 record to the state championships. Two of those losses were to Christman. Gaspard's biggest test prior to the finals was getting past Cortez, which he did by a one point victory 5-4.
The Basile freshman Cortez is to be watched closely by opponents. With a little more consistency, and having Gavin Christ to work-out with in practice, Cortez should move closer to the top of the awards podium than the third-place position.
