Top-seeded Conrad Wyre gave De LaSalle their first individual state championship of the evening with a 6-2 decision over third-seeded Matthew Webre of Ouachita Christian.

De LaSalle's Wyre, a runner-up in 2016, had an excellent senior year.  With a record of 40-2, he placed third in the Cashio-Shriever (with a loss to Jesuit's Nathan Koenig, which Wyre would avenge in the Louisiana Classic semifinals), won the Trygg Memorial, the Brusly Invitational, the Ken Cole, the GNO Division III District and placed 2nd at the Louisiana Classic to Jake Rando of Holy Cross. 

More importantly, however, was that Wyre defeated the first through fifth seeds handily during the regular season.  Other notables that he defeated were Koenig, avenged at the LA Classic from the Cashio-Shriever, Parkway's Dalton Driggers, Shaw's Eduardo Garcia, and Seth Alfonso and Fernando Diaz from Brother Martin.

Seeding Jacob Pelle of Crescent City second and Matthew Webre third is not terribly important, but it does beg the question "why?"  Webre had first-place awards from the Wildcat and the Eagle Opens.  He placed third at the Ken Cole at 152 lbs., while Pelle did not place at 160 lbs.  The semifinal mat, however, made any argument mute as Webre scored an 8-3 victory to meet Wyre in the finals.
