Brusly senior Richard Hunter won his third consecutive Division III championship with a 5-2 decision over third-seeded Julius Johnson of Kaplan.

Brusly's Richard Hunter had an exceptional senior year against stellar competition.  The 48-2 record he brought to the state championships included championships at the Brusly 8, the Hurricane 8, the Spartan Invitational, the Zachary Big Horse and the Brusly Invitational.  Hunter also won the Ken Cole Memorial over St. Amant's Sage Nugent due to an unintentional slam to the mat (actually, it was more of a drop), which temporarily rendered Hunter unconscious.  His best matches were saved for the undefeated Josh Ramirez of Rummel.  In the finals of the Raider 8, Ramirez defeated Hunter 8-3.  A 5-4 loss to Ramirez in the Louisiana Classic was the closest Ramirez came to losing a match this year.  Hunter was, of course seeded first in the 182 lbs. weight class.  He reached the finals via falls in 3:03 and 2:12.

Third-seeded Julius Johnson of Kaplan had a record of 15-3, with championships at the St. Louis Invitational and the Lafayette Metro Tournament, and a third-place finish at the Brusly Invitational.  Johnson's losses came from Brusly's defending state champion Brandon Young, St. Amant's Sage Nugent and to De LaSalle's Sean Barbarin, who was seeded second in the weight class.  Johnson's path to the finals included a 7-0 decision over #6 Mason Sparks of Lakeside, and a fall in 3:27 versus Barbarin.  That was a "step-up" for the Kaplan senior, as he placed third in 2016.
